Money - pure and simple.
The teams "trekked" to bloody South Africa in 1962 to do races when travelling those types of distances was much more difficult and costly than today.
Whether GPs appear on lists or not is ALL down to whther the circuits are prepared to pony up the exhorbitant amounts Bernie wants from them for the priviledge of hosting the race. The teams would travel to Antartica if they thought they would get the necessary dosh.

True, but your third paragraph answers your second. The teams "trekked" to bloody South Africa in 1962 to do races when travelling those types of distances was much more difficult and costly than today.

They went to SA (and to Argentina, etc) because the teams were paid sufficient appearance money directly by the promoter.
