Disasters of the 24hour...ISL??
Discussion
Due to the sheer nature of a 24hour race there are bound to be a number of 'disasters'. Just wondered if anyone would care to give a perspective of how their race went.
I've heard something about ISL having gearbox problems and falling out with one or more of their drivers but don't really know much else. I think i've seen ISLSteve on here before, am i right in thinking it was gearbox issues you suffered with? Not a bad result finishing where you did if so.

For us it was pretty straightforward. Two driveshaft failures (both right side), which was rather annoying as they never fail, plus we had to change the silencers when our drive-by got a little loud (a 2 minute job, during a regular driver/tyre stop).
That was all. Without the driveshafts we might have pipped Rollcentre to second. Our car was as quick at the end as it was at the start - we set our fastest lap in the 19th hour.
Duller was untouchable though.

I think The Sagaris must but up there for 24hr disasters... an engine bay fire in Qually, and then a new driver on fresh cold tyres, straight out of the pits for his first stint and straight into the armco
early in the race. I dont think I'd have gone back to the pits, just clambered over the fence and legged it home

I was running the Team Thrush Integra DC2.
We lead class from the lights and were running about 12th overall before we lost power about 23 hours in.
We finally traced it back to a wire in the crank sensor and got it running but we droped to second in class.
By no means a disaster but disapointing none the less.
Still there is always next year
Well done to everyone who finnished an achivement in itself !

Our power steering decided to play up 4 hours in, so heavy steering, about 60% heavier than normal but driveable and never got any worse. We also had an air lock in the tank so could only slap upto 90 litres in at time, very slowly.
Other than taking to the grass at around 100mph in avoidance of a spinning yellow Marcos into Becketts was about it.
The Bread van ran like a train.

The Sagaris (yellow with union flag?) crashed exitting Corpse at about 2-3am - can't have been anyone's first stint?

I think our only disaster was no bacon butties on Sunday morning...

Disasters?
All of the Marcoses - as well as Alun Edwards problems, just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Jemco and Topcats, the Chesterton car needed an engine change, then did a good part of the race in 5th gear, and Cor Euser fell foul of the noise police.
Guy Povey - close to tears after seeing the late-evening
12th overall, thanks to stunning fuel economy, come to an end with a roll into the barriers.
Team Scandal - raised their game as usual, then suffered a litany of minor disasters, including being punted round four times in the same accident.
Chad - jammed wheel nuts on the Porsche, and "that" accident with the Mosler.
Willie Moore and GTS - great efforts thwarted by diffs and drive shafts
Windrush - Raun Austin deserves better than the way this is turning out, and the early failure was cruel luck; that dreaded #2 cylinder on the straight-6 BMW engine once again.

I felt very sorry for the poor little Porsche team between us and Rollcentre - the guy's name was John Clonis, I think. The car was in trouble with a fuel leak on lap 1, then seemed to have problem after problem all race. Each time we thought it had finally died it would re-appear again for a couple of laps. Towards the end their stops and driver changes were so frequent that I guess they were just giving their drivers some value for money.
They should have got some sort of award. Mind you, every Marcos seemed to be coughing and spluttering most of the time too - Top Cats seemed to go into the garage at every routine stop and another one (very dark in colour, with white wheels) was in all sorts of bother throughout Sunday.

Hi
I was one of the John Clonis drivers and yeah we could have had a better run of luck but also we could have had it worse! Fuel rail split on lap one, followed by throttle linkage failure. Paul was avoiding another car that seemed not to have seen him and took to the grass with consequences for exhaust, gearbox mount and driveshaft. The big blow was the (believed correct at time of writing) melted piston that destroyed our engine 5 minutes before race suspension. Spare engine fitted in two hours but we took another hour for safety to clean oil lines and coolers of any debris that might kill second engine to be sure. Then the damn thing would not start and run properly which eventually was traced to a faulty head temperature sender. That hurt our running time a lot. A brake fluid leak lost us some more time. But hey, we finished and were classified, not last at that! John has a great team around him and if asked they could re-float the Titanic!

don't ask.......
You still managed to beat our Beemer...(Moore Racing)
we suffered about 4 punctures ( why do the tyres always seem to let go just after copse!!), got caught once having to refuel under the safety car, which really buggers you up. Them a diff failure, followed by the rear wishbones starting to fall apart and needing a complete rear suspension change...
The Civic didnt get away without its problems, an off track excursion gave it suspension alignment problems requiring a stop for a bit of a fettle, Then when running very quickly with Miles Hulford at the wheel lost a front wheel, when the studs sheared. That took the best part of an hour to get recoverd back to the pits followed by a fairly quick fix and back on track. Towards the end o the race it came in with a warning light on and increasing hesitation, which turned out to be a head gasket, so it was parked up for a while before trundling out to take the finish...
Still we managed both cars across the line after 4:30 so thats 4 finished out of 5 in the Britcar 24, if not exactly trouble free.
There was also a 911 GT2 ( white) a couple of garages in who brought it in after about an hour straight into the garage and were packed up and gone by tea time !!!

That was Peter Cook's car. It was the second engine it had lost in two days. Shame, as I love the old 993 GT2s.Disaster for ISL! No way man!
This is our third 24 hours and after finishing in 34th and then 30th we were looking to move a little further up the order this year.
Things did not look good when the engine let go in the daytime qualifying resulting in an engine and gearbox change. This took the rest of the afternoon and we were able to get it out with about 40 mins to spare for night time qualifying. One of the drivers was not confident that we would complete it in time for the race! (He doesn't know us boys very well) and had departed for another team. So the car qualified for the race.
Biggest challange before the race was ensuring all the radios worked and were fitted(big thanks to the guys and gal at Autotel for all thier help)
Car started well but we lost third gear after about 2 hours, so we did the rest of the race with only four gears that were usable. There was talk about changing the box but when we are lapping at 6 to 10 seconds a lap quicker than the cars behind, and 4 to 18 seconds quicker than those cars in front, it really was a no brainer, so we continued and monitored everyones times. A few issues with some lights and then the starter packed up, resulting in push starting for the rest of the race, another driver departure in the early hours when Alun (Team Principal) was out driving, just added to the challanges of the 24 hours.
So Alun and Robin shared the last stints of the early morning and the rest of the day and made excellent progress through the ranks to reach 14th overall with half an hour to go! Then a wheel bearing went and we had to cruise to the flag with 10 minutes to go and lost two places to eventually finish in 16th place overall and first Marcos home. Talking to Warren of Topcats later who was telling us of the tales of woe for both his team and the Jemco boys and this confirmed that we had the better luck for the race.
Disaster: No. Result, I should bloody say so! Thanks to all the team who helped out, to James and his team for organising what is really an amazing event, and to all the other teams who we have become friends with over the years for making it such fun! (did I really just say that?)
Heres to 2008.
