Apparently if there's a repeat of this years crowd (18,000) then the DTM organisers are going to pull the plug

That's a terrible crowd for Brands.

Motorsport, as a spectator sport, is in its death throws in the UK. Apart from BSB and BTCC (sort of), nothing outside of the one-off events like Goodwood/F1/free Renault day etc draws any sort of a crowd.

Shame no one in power seems to understand.

I'm not surprised as there is no racing - even Formula Renault can't overtake on the indy track. They can't use the gp track because of noise restrictions (look at it on Google Earth there are houses right next to the straight.

They really need to go to Donington like they did in the ITC days.

DTM can also drop the two mandatory pitstops - just give us a straight 1 hour race.

Didn't go to the DTM this year, and that was partly because of the format they ran last year. There was racing up until about 2pm I think, with the DTM race being the last of the morning, then there was about a 2.5 hour wait until the racing started again, with just Damon Hill(I think) giving pax rides around the circuit. An hour for lunch I expect, but 2.5 hours of 1 car on track got a bit tedious. I can imagine that put a lot of people of attending this year, although as I didn't go, I don't know if they had changed that.

edit: Just got out my 2006 DTM Brands programme, DTM race started at 12pm(85 laps), after that there was one Formula Palmer Audi race(30mins@1:45pm) until racing started again at 4:10pm.

The DTM organisers want to run on the Indy Circuit.

that's becuase the circuits won't let the organising clubs take a share of the gate receipt, if they did, the clubs would be more likely to promote thier events, get 2000 people in at a tenner a head, and significantly offset the outlay of the hire of the circuit. which in turn could mean lower entry fees for competitors, possibly prize money, and therefore more people competing, making the racing better.

people will come to club racing, you only have to look at the success of the castle combe events, upwards of 8000 on most race weekends.

You're logic isn't bad for some cases but DTM is run by MSVR which JP has set up to run this type of event. So both the last two DTM meetings were run, promoted and organised by MSV.

Have been to both DTM's at Brands and i have to say you would need to go a long way to find anything as dull!
Race too long, just 2 manufacturers, poor grids, few top drivers, loads of make weights (Ickx, Lauda, etc) zero overtaking, comentary that you cannot hear, and huge build up of pomp and massive delays of self congratulation after.
Chuck in VIP circuit rides whilst the spectators have bugger all to do and you will understand why i will not return!

They really should have avoided scheduling it the same day as a BTCC race if they want bigger crowds. I'll certainly have to miss it next year if there is no change in dates and I'm not the only one.frown

We went in 2006 - even the parachute team didnt jump because JP flew his chopper over the circuit at the same time as they were meant to appear.

YAs abovew - race was dull and cars were not as noisy, or exiting as you would expect from powerful rear wheel drive cars.

Didnt go this year and wont go next. Just been to the WTCC this weekend, almost as bad as you couldnt tell what was happening on the GP loop. Another one off the list!

As i understand it they can only use the GP circuit for a limited number of events each year. DTM *could* run on the GP loop if the organisers wanted it, but that would mean another event having to use the Indy Circuit. They have 1 less free day for the GP circuit next year as the BTCC finale will be using the full circuit (BTCC 50th anniversary)

The International GTs ran on the GP circuit at the weekend are were a hell of a lot noisier than the DTM cars will ever be.

As I've said, the DTM organisers want to run on the Indy circuit.

There are only limited GP circuit dates but the DTM do not want to run on the GP circuit, I don't doubt that MSV would allow the GP circuit to be used for DTM if the organisers wanted that but they don't.

Poor though Doningtons facilities are, I'd happily go there to watch the DTM.

I went last year at too watch the DTM, and it was a fantastic day out, helped also with good weather. I am surprised there was only 18000 this year. I really hope it does not get dropped.

I went this year with open mind and it was the biggest anti-climax! The cars are like sportscars dressed to look like a C-Class/A4, dull sounding V8s, loads of aero bits + RWD = crap race car for the spectator - haven't they learned from F1?

DTM was a lot better in the mid-90s, pre-ITC. The Donny races were pretty good.

I wish they bring back Group A touring cars but used the Aussie V8 formula. How about DTM with M3s vs. RS4s and RWD!

Brands is over-rated, always living on past glories. The Indy track shows you whats wrong with single seaters today - whatever formula apart from FFords, you can't overtake because they're designed to be mini-F1 cars - to much aero grip for their own good.

Bloody hell i just looked at a photo. Why on earth do people buy houses literally backing on to a racing track then complain about the noise? rolleyes

As for the number of spectators why do they hold it in Kent? If there is only going to be one DTM race in Britain each year then surely it would be better to hold it in the middle of the country i.e. Donnington? Brands Hatch really is too far for most people to travel.

I don't know but I imagine the rebuild of Donington's pit lane has probably ruled them out of running DTM. The stepped pit lane would likely be as problematic as it was for LMES in 2006.

At one round of DTM this year there were 140,000 fans. Boring...I think not
