[Piglet climbs up on soapbox] I am finding this whole F1 circus quite tedious now. I resent that this one aspect of motorsport being reported and discussed like it is some kind of tabloid/reality show.

I'm bored with hundreds (OK I exaggerate slightly) of threads that all end up with someone who, in many cases had never watched F1 until Lewis arrived on the scene, yet again spouting rubbish about tyres and race strategy.

I'm not entirely sure what bugs me most about it, I think it's the whole bandwagon thing - if I felt that the LH effect was in any way going to help British Motorsport generally and increase gates at meetings other than the GP I could regard it as a bonus but we've seen historically that the "bandwagon fans" have no interest in anything other than F1 and only then whilst their "chosen one" is doing well (look at the response to Jenson).

The lack of interest in Andy Priaulx is pretty indicative of how it all is, he's a good British driver doing fantastically well in Touring Cars and lined up potentially for a third Championship - does anyone care? Only about four of us I think at last count!

Oh and...last point - I don't give a toss whether Lewis walks to the toilet with is father and don't understand why anyone else would care!

Discuss....biggrin

It is the cult of celebrity and life as soap opera.
There is no difference (media wise, which is just about everything) between LH and a Big Brother contestant.

The OP is one of the few with their own brain. Most people are stupid, once you truly take that on board life becomes a lot easier.
LH fanboys say the silliest things. There are myriad examples of it on here. Including one member who is putting a plaque with a lie on it on his car's dashboard. Puerile.

We moan that F1 isn't popular now we're moaning it's getting popular.

Look at football. The more of "them" we get migrating to our sport the lower the bar will become.

Don't forget James Toseland, double WSB champion. Hardly hear about that.

If you look at it all from a different point of view. More people showing an interest, may make some of those currently looking at the LH/F1, enjoy the thrill of motorsport and look into other area's. Now I know it's not going to be on mass, but any additional support is surely better for motorsport in general. You never know, it may filter into the 'lower' area's.

Do you really think that's true? I don't, there is very little evidence that "feature" events like F1 help the gate at "normal" events. There is some evidence that they help sell trackdays at F1 circuits but other than that there is very little cross over - actually computer games do better out of it that the gate at club meetings.

It's a bit like Le Mans, vast numbers of Brits go to Le Mans, and a vast proportion of those never go to another motor race in a year and don't follow sports cars at all (or did I miss the threads on Petit Le Mans this weekend?)

The "bandwagon fans" aren't interested in motorsport, they are reacting to the TV and media hype in the same way they do when other Brits do well (Paula Radcliffe, Kelly Holmes etc). This will calm down and they'll find another big story to follow and the rest of us can return to our little holes where we follow our non-mainstream sports!

i'll tell you what annoys me.

It seems to be all about what the drivers do and say off the track..

Look at Hamilton (as per your post) - for a rookie, on track, he's done a fantastic job - even if he throws it all away at the last race and only comes 3rd in the Championship - for a 22-year old rookie, thats still one hell of an achievement.

Yet, he's either put up on a pedastal where he can do no wrong, or slated because, well, some people just like to bash winners.

Same for Alonso - all of a sudden, its all about what he does and says, not how he drives.

And it carries on - the circus doesnt appear to revolve around what happens on the track anymore.. which is a shame, since it has been quite an entertaining season, with a close drivers championship.

That's because the is no action on the track anymore, the media have to fill their pages with something...

If F1 spent as much energy into building cars that can fight wheel to wheel as they spend on lawyers to do battle from court to court, then all the focus would be back on the track...

I think a part of the problem is that when you spend years watching Motor Racing of all sorts (I attend allsorts, AMOC, Britcar, BGT, FIA GT, LMS & occasionally F1), you get a knack for reading tactics and being able to spot a quick driver.

Every time I go to the pub I hear conversations on F1 where they regurgitate what James Allen has told them over the weekend and what they've read in the Sun. It's a bit like what football always has been except its hurting our dear motorsports.

Flemke said he has ordered a new plaque for his F1 that includes the 2007 constructor championship on it. Fair enough in my opinion. McLaren have certainly earned the title but have been denied it because of a flawed investigation and decision.

I parked in the reserved "Lewis Hamilton" car parking spot at the Stevenage (home town) Asda the other day.

Now if only I was half cast, and driving a Merc people might buy it and pay for my shopping.

I can see your point but I consider myself a keen motorsport fan and I don't find the WTCC particularly interesting. Hence I'm not too interested in Priaulx's exploits either. Perhaps that is a factor in him not getting very much recognition here? (or maybe its just me?!)

I agree with your sentiments about some of the new found 'experts' the arrival of Hamilton seems to have generated. In the same vain I'm also finding the constant bleating of his some of his critics very tedious too.

I used to go to 4 odd BTCC rounds a year, but like you I currently find myself with no interest in the series despite being a keen motorsport fan.

Odd, can't put my finger on why.

I'm actually going to the BTCC at Thruxton this Sunday! (having been to two other rounds this year already). I don't know if that makes me odd or not? confusedhehe

I guess I can get into the rivalries in the BTCC more than the WTCC. And they tend to smash into each other a bit more biggrin

The FIA have put a lot of effort into making cars race better. Banning the worst of ground effect and putting a wooden plank on the bottom. Keeping the cars narrow. Making all the engines the same power.

And they have a load more planned in coming years starting with no TC (something they never wanted) from next year.

I think some of the tracks Bernie takes the circus to are far more to blame for the lack of racing than anything you can blame the FIA for.
