Its not really been a bad career move then has it:
Move to Mclaren for big money.

Move back to where he's loved, but on a massive salary.
Where's my boss? I'm off to tell him I'm working for that company across the road for a few months. But I'll be back soon, so reserve me a massive pay rise for when I get back.

I think that's very possible!I just hope the FIA have the sense to punish Alonso by taking points off him for next season....should he do something blatantly dirty
What about the other major sponsor Santander, aren't they Spanish? Won't they be a little miffed at loosing Alonso and withdraw their sponsorship? Which means McLaren will have an even bigger hole in their finances.
Also don't think Alonso can buy himself out of his contract, he was on a pittence at Renault so surely wouldn't be able to afford to, especially as it's another year plus a retainer for 2009 - may be wrong there though

Plus Santander are pushing worldwide so having a Spanish driver doesn't help that aspect.

Back on topic, would it make next years title more entertaining? Although there'd be no team orders for any potential champion, it would remove some of the best drivers from having equal machinery. Result: a ferrari, a renault or a Mclaren would take it turn about to have the edge at any given weekend so less chance for team-mate on team-mate battles.
