Not great on my f1 history but how about Prost, came back from his sabbatical and won with Williams didn't he? Or how about Hakkinen, did he do another year after winning his second championship or quit at the top? Think he might have done...

Didn't Prost retire as champion in 1993?

Alain Prost was the last.

It was Prost.

From memory, others that spring to mind were:

1958 Hawthorn? Tragically had no choice in the matter but sure he retired at the end of 1958

1970 Rindt - fate intervened but Stewart reckoned he may have quit, however we'll never know...

1973 Stewart

1993 Prost

You could also add Fangio, as he retired as reigning World Champion, although it was part-way through the 1958 season

Mansell initially retired as champion in 1992 but made an ill conceived comeback woith McLaren in 1995 - and later had another one off comeback with Williams.

I think his Williams comeback was in 1994, filling the number 2 car for some of the races after Senna died, whilst Coulthard did the other races. His 1995 McLaren races were his final Grands Prix.

Lauda raced in 85. I think Alan Jones initially retired after his championship but made a comeback.

Hakinnen did two seasons after his second title.

Prost was definitely the last.
