It sounds glorious but I fail to see any mind blowing skill. The course has 4 'corners' and it's probably not his first run of the day. Not difficult to hang out a car you know.

I drove the TVR up the Doune course during the interval at the June meeting: only got up to about 40, don't know how they do it at 3 times that speed.

No skill? Er, - I beg to differ - much skill and gonads like spacehoppers...

I didn't say he wasn't displaying skill, but making a car move around for 30 seconds of a circuit you've probably run 10 times that day isn't exactly F1 / WRC level.

I think it has more than 4 corners on that hill.

You need to go and see a British Championship Hill Climb to appreciate the skill of these guys, on such narrow tracks. When it goes wrong they have very little room for error.I know i couldn't do it, I was fortunate to have been lent a Hart 420R engined Pilbeam to do a sprint in the late 80's, I was knackered from concentrating.

Great sport though.

Just because someone is good enough for F1 does not mean they are going to get noticed and given a drive and it also does not mean they have the money to pay for a drive.......

I have no doubt in my mind that the best potential F1 drivers hardly ever make it to F1.
I would say that skill makes up about 20% to 30& of an F1 driver's CV. The rest is made up by the ability to self promote, financial backing and appeal factor to Bernie.

at risk of being flamed to hell and back, much as hillclimbs require serous levels ability in terms of car control etc, there's a bit more to cct racing (at F1 levels) appart from car control.

Purest form of motorsport if you ask me, just you against the stopwatch, every element has to be spot on for the ultimate time, perfect start, braking, turn in, corner exit, its very hard to achieve & immensly satisfying & terrifing in roughly equal measure!

As for the dipstick who says you get 10 runs or so, try over a championship weekend(sat & sun) 4 runs in total (for me 26/27 seconds each at Shelsley), 2 practice, 2 timed & thats it, so no time to settle yourself in, you have to be on it from the first practice. Now having given circuit racing a go (Radical) that seems so relaxing by comparison, lovely 60ft wide track, so loads of room to correct mistakes, make a mistake at one corner & there are another 18 or so laps to make up for it on! No where near as much of a buzz!

Its not club motorsport by the way, its the National hillclimb championship that car usually competes with quite a few other seriously quick cars, reaching 150mph on 10ft wide bumpy surfaces with no room for error, beleive me I know!

As someone once said, "Right now the best driver in the world is probably cutting down trees in Scandanavia".

You have to drive a hillclimb course to appreciate how hard it is. They're nearly always far more technical than they look and driving in that close a vicinity to walls is bloody scary.

As a former trials rider, this is the motorsport I'd do - like someone said, it's just you against the track and the stopwatch. It's pure.

Not to mention that there have been a number of international standard drivers and the odd GP/F1 driver who has had a few runs up the hills.

Granted there are not many that would be able to attain F1 standard but there is some serious talent out there, and not only on the driving side but also on the engineering and development front.
