superkarts

are there any kart (or other?) tracks in the UK that have superkarts available for you to drive - or do they only tend to be driven by those already in race series?

ideally london area (i.e. within around 150 miles)

i've been to lakeside a few times and apparently those karts do 70mph or so but i would like to try something faster (without having to buy a kart and enter a race series!)

I seriously doubt someone is just going to let you have a go in a 90+Bhp Kart, or let you hire one for that matter.

That would be more like 150+ mph

But his title did say Superkart...

He does however probably mean just a Rotax Max or something I guess. In which case his best bet would be to go to a kart shop located at a track, and try blag a test.

Although your not going to get much faster than 80 mph on a short circuit in the UK.

Rye House in Herts had a Rotax for hire at £135/hr or so. 100cc 2-stroke 'tests' for Club 100 are also available.

Don't know what the OP's karting experience is, but I used to co-own a Prokart (70-ish mph as he mentions). Driving a 100cc 2-stroke was like chalk & cheese; the 100 was much more fun. Felt MUCH quicker when in the power band, and very adjustable & pointy.

ok thanks guys - i guess there could be a lot of problems with an 'arrive and drive' in a superkart!! i thought i'd seen something once (possibly milton keynes) but can't find it now...

yeah i didn't necessarily mean 'superkarts' - just something faster than you find at most little kart tracks. so yeah the rotax / 100 sounds good, i'll definitely look into that - cheers!

No - not a chance.

Fastest kart at Milton would be the Max karts, but geared for endurance racing. Milton K would be deadly in an ICC

I was referring to the Rotax Max, at Warden Law they do about 85(ish)mph, I'm assuming you were using an ICC kart, of course you could probably get a old 100cc Screamer with no lead on to go a fair bit quicker than the average Max (unless it's a Christodoulou Special of course ).

Let a good mate have a go in my ICC last year, track was empty and he's a good road driver.... he was about 15 seconds* off the pace *about right for a non racer* and was blown away by the speed and could not stop shaking/grining and told the whole world how great it was, happy chap!

If anything have a test in one, you might be quick!

• Pro Kart top of the line kart 43 seconds
• *Milton Karts are about 5 seconds slower than that so say 48 seconds maybe much slower

Have to agree with a lot of the posts here regarding superkarts, not been on one but have seen them racing-they are seriously fast, from memory I think they could qualify for the front row of F3.

I did try at Three Sisters in Wigan a day of training on Karts some years ago, they start you off with basically a standard Kart you've probably ridden at your local Kart centre, then up to 100cc race Kart (pretty exciting in their own right) and then finished off with laps in a 125cc 6-speed Kart. At the time I have to admit to being a tad scared, the sensation of speed is amazing, especially as some of their barriers (made out of old railway sleerpers) were too close for comfort.

I think I'd try a 125 shifter first.

BTW - if you really want to scare yourself then I think Cadwell Park will let you out in a 250 superkart, just make sure you've got your life assurance up to date first!

fantastic, thanks for your help guys.

i'm not exactly the hottest driver (do about 4 trackdays a year but not raced) but just want to try something a little faster than the twin engined karts i've tried so far.

will check out the suggestions above, i'm pretty sure i'd be crapping myself the first time out in a 125 6-speeder. i've done cadwell in my little car, best track i've ever been on but needs a fair bit of respect - i'm pretty sure i wouldn't do a superkart justice around there (tho i am tempted just to see!! )
