Was at Oulton last week and wouldn't mind getting into being a marshall. I noticed some of the blokes had a URL on their coveralls (www.marshals.co.uk) and have had a look there.
There were LOADS of marshals out and about, are some of them employed by the circuit? The ones who start races / do the recoveries etc?
And yes, I know it involves standing in the rain
. Will being young count against me?

. Will being young count against me?Hi, there are a few marshals on here, without wishing to plug another website, there is a marshals forum at Ten-tenths.com and you'll get good info on there - there are quite a lot of Oulton marshals on there.
Marshal's aren't paid, recovery staff probably are and there will be some circuit staff who are paid to mend barriers, deal with circuit damage etc., but they are likely to be permanent staff.

I'm just about to turn 20, but I (like to think that) have my head screwed on. I'll pop over and introduce myself Marshal's aren't paid, recovery staff probably are and there will be some circuit staff who are paid to mend barriers, deal with circuit damage etc., but they are likely to be permanent staff.

(for anyone under 16, there are limited options - ofter pit/paddock runners between Race Control and Assembly)

thats the volunteering form for the North West (covers Oulton Park and Anglesey)
Basically fill in your name and address, leave the MSA number blank, grade is Trainee for you, Duty - you can choose now from Start line, Pits, Course (thats the trainee grade for incident handling - ie those that go to a crashed car) and Flag (those that wave the flags obviously)
then tick the meetings you wish to volunteer for, and you'll recieve your tickets and final instructions about a week or 2 before the meeting. the instuctions will tell you where to sign on and at what time (incident is usually Chequers restraunt, flaggies and observers at Race Control)
Then send it to Dave Cleavly - his email addy is at the bottom of the form.
You may want to get in touch with Nadine - she organises a new marshals induction - which involves a tour round the circuit from a marshals perspective in the morning, and a afternoon on the bank

dont worry about any special equipment to start with, just dont wear anything that is bright Red, yellow, blue or Green (hence why most british marshals wear orange)

on the club front - you dont need to be a member of any club to marshal - you can volunteer for any meeting, organised by any club, any where in the country, and when you've been doing it a little while, then you can also volunteer for international meetings as well.
(ie you can volunteer for anything from a club meeting run by BARC or BRSCC to the BTCC meetings and the Goodwood FoS or Revival, get enough time on the bank and you can volunteer for the British GP and overseas GPs as well as the Le Mans 24hr...)
some clubs have discounts available for eqipment - the Marshals club BMMC gets their overalls from AWS, at a discount rate, BARC do their own, and the Vintage Car Club VSCC also have discount overalls.
ps - about the numbers at the GT weekend... vitually everyone involved on the officals side is a volunteer. all the marshals on the bank (flag, incident, Post Chief/Observer) Start line marshals, pits assembly, to those answering the phones working the radio in Race Control, the MSA Stewards, Clerks of the Course, the Rescue Unit teams, Recovery teams are all volunteers (the rescue and recovery teams get some payment towards the upkeep of the vehicles, some of the rescue units are provided by the organising clubs - BARC or BRSCC)

MSA regulations allow sixteen-year-olds to work in areas which are considered to be part of the race track, i.e.pits, startline & trackside, but anyone under eighteen must have the signature of a parent or guardian. Some clubs have variations on this, so it's always best to check with the chief marshal.
The Oulton/Anglesey volunteering form should be used at least two weeks before the event - any less than that, contact the organising club.

Would be a good idea to try rallying too - different to circuit work and may appeal.
