Monza LMS accident today

I'm not one for looking for accidents but because this was a monster and Stephane Ortelli got away with just a broken ankle, could have been a lot worse.

Allan McNish was in the Audi that it just missed, big escape for both.

Any idea on the cause. Almost certain it was the left rear, but suspension, tyre, transmisssion?

Its been a bad weekend for motorport in terms of crashes,
Franchitti broken ankle at Talladega.
Kovalinen fortunatly uninjured although a very bad crash which had us holding our breath.
Jamie Campbell-Walter injured his back in practice at Monza.
Capello was very lucky flat spinning that Audi on the straight after clipping the Rollcentre Pescarolo.
Ortellis crash could have been much worse if McNish's Audi had been a bit further on the track.

I watched this last night (as it was on instead of the WRC that I had actually wanted to see).

Yes that crash was shocking, especially as it had started on a straight.
What caused it?

We have really seen the benefit of driver safety cells this weekend.

Big, big incident. And so close to taking out the other car. Any idea what caused it?

He should be buying a lottery ticket as he escaped that without serious injury.

Makes you realise that with all the safety stuff nowadays, it's still a high risk sport.

Looks like a left rear brake failure to me. Nasty shunt, he is very lucky with how the car hit the barrier.

Not sure about the cause but would totally agree with you on just how lucky he was with the way, whats left of the car, hitting the barriers the 'right' way.

Watching on Eurosport/Motorstv and listening to Hindy it was not nice to hear a silence from all commentators.

I was very disappointed by Eurosport/Motorstv & RLM for not giving us an update on Ortelli's condition.
Normally I'm not one to compliment ITV's coverage of F1, but at least they updated us on Heikki Kovalainen before the end of the coverage.
