Rain is often a great performance leveller in Formula One, but double champion Fernando Alonso is not hoping for a slippery Monaco Grand Prix.
Many race fans are crossing their fingers that wet weather forecasts for the Monte Carlo weekend are right, but already several drivers have expressed nervousness about the prospective combination of water, the tight and oily street circuit, and the absence of electronic aids.
Alonso was asked by the Spanish press on Wednesday if he sees the adverse weather forecast as an opportunity to race and beat the usual 2008 pacesetters this weekend.
"Last year we did a practice session in the wet (here) and it was virtually impossible to drive the car, even with all the driver aids.
"This year it would be a nightmare, although I suppose a good result is possible because many cars might crash.
"But I don't have a good feeling about it, so I hope it stays dry," he admitted.

God forbid these overpaid girls should actually have to drive their cars around the track using skill and bravery rather than electronics...
+1Its like they've lost all car control, surely that should be part of being at the top level of the "sport"?
But a good bit of rain will definitely spice things up.
Reckon it should play well for Hamilton.
I do find this type of thing funny. As commented, the loss of TC and electronic aids is not a new thing. So they need to race on a narrow track in the rain? Yeah, so what? Just be a little more careful and make sure you don't nerf the driver next to you. Its not that hard and since they have a lot of experience in the cars in the first place, it can't be that hard.
Its almost like my 7 year old son with GT5:
Son: Its not very easy this, I keep crashing off the circuit
Me: Yeah, because you need to brake for the corners
Son: Yeah, I know. But why doesn't it help me?
Me: Er, because I turned them off for a bigger challenge
Son: That's daft, before it just sorted out everything for you.....
Which says it all for me. Was F1 really like a computer game? Did you just point it at a corner and keep your foot down, the electronics will sort out everything else for you and hey presto - little actual skill required.

I can't help thinking F1 would be more exiting if they took away all the electronics and daft looking aerodynamic wings and stuff, and just gave everyone a controlled-spec car so it was down to pure driver skill. I know F1 is supposed to be pinnacle of the art etc.., but it's just sooooo dull.
That F1 masters thing was just brilliant to watch, although I wonder how much of that excitement was down to the fact that the older drivers were actually racers and not just a coporate logo with a hairstyle on top....

Yes, they're all great drivers, but how often do they actually practise in the wet?
Dont forget that the circuit will have varying degrees of grip, due to the fact that the rain will have washed away certain amounts of rubber laid down during practise. Also, being normally a road, all sorts of crap will rise to the surface, making it more slippery than a bespoke circuit.
And, the cars are immensely powerful. They have, what, 1500 bhp per ton? What does a veyron have? 500bhp per ton? This is just acceleration. What of the braking? Stopping a 600kg car from high speed in the rain without ABS? I'd hasten to add, I think these guys are very skilled at what they do.
But if thats not enough, lets not forget one thing. Besides the simple mechanical challenges just described, they're also RACING. This involves pushing the limit. They have accidents at the best of times, so if it rains, chances are, it'll be all happening.
