Hiya, I race minimotos and have been riding them for a couple of years now.
www.minimotoclub.com is the main forum however it often gets spammed up with kids arguing about what 2 stroke oil is best, but its worth a look.
Basically, if you don't know much about the sport, it is completely removed from the 'chavs on carparks' name minimoto has got itself in recent years, the racing events use decent machinery, safety standards are very high and some of the best kart tracks in the country are used (such as Whilton Mill, Stretton, Rowrah, Ellough Park etc).
There are a good few classes, basically '4.2s' which are air cooled normally Polini engined. These are a great way to get juniors into the sport (you can race from age 6 on a 4.2) and there is also an adult 4.2 class.
There is then the open aircooled which is for faster aircooled bikes, I race in this class
Production, which are watercooled bikes of around 11 hp , these are very rapid bikes.
Supers, an open watercooled class which can have anything to around 15hp which can be pretty scary a foot off the ground.
Other classes run at minimoto events such as pitbikes, which are a bigger 'supermoto' style bike. These are around 140cc and are 4 stroke. This classis becoming very popular recently, with the minimoto classes declining a bit which is a shame.
Then there is GP50 and GP70 which are junior (and also an adult class) road race machines with either 12 or 17 inch wheels, these are used as the stepping stone between minimoto and 125s usually

the 3 main series which run are the NPS (national pocket bike series), LCRRC (Low capacity road racing club) and the MMRA (minimoto racing association)
Each have similar classes, and the costs are from £55 per weekend to about £90 per weekend.
A decent starter bike can be picked up for around £400 for a 4.2 and £700 for a production, take a look on ebay.
Anything chinese built selling for 50 quid - 150 quid, however good the ad sounds, will be slow and fairly uncompetitive and will be very unreliable. These are really what gave minimotos a 'bad name' as chavs got hold of them and took them on the streets.
Hope i have helped, it would be nice to see a newcomer to racing minimotos as numbers aren't as high as they were a couple of years back.
