mclarens extra paddles

few sites are mentioning extra paddles seen on the mclaren steering wheel - supposedly for choosing engine torque maps on the fly for specific corners - as a way of sidestepping the tc ban.
firstly tho, it's not tc as there's no speed sensor and feedback loop, and secondly, all teams will have built in throttle maps etc for every single corner on the track prior to the race, with the option to further tweak (albeit global) settings on the steering wheel, so these probably have very rare use...
unless i'm missing something? at least no calls of foul play *yet*

the top 5 or 6 qualifiers in the F1 race used to get guest drives in the one make series at the end of the seventies, used to make a fantastic noise
It's a way to get around the stupid rule that you can't auto select the map in the ECU, you have to manually change it. All the teams have dials on the steering wheels to swap between maps, McLaren have also added a feature that switches up and down through the maps depending on what gear you are in, so you can have a softer map for low gear and ramp it up as the speed and therefor traction increases.
I've got a similar function on my Impreza road car, but it does it automatically as i've programmed a boost controller to have gear specific waste gate duty rates, so can have different levels of boost in each gear, or the same level of boost in each gear (which takes more waste gate duty the lower the gear is because the turbo load is lower). I did this with a £250 piece of kit, which kind of makes the current F1 rules on this functionality a bit farcical.

Mark Hughes can't count, or needs glasses. There are FOUR extra paddles, not two. There are the standard two for the gears, and below them there are two for the clutch and two for the map, and in the event of a spin all four lower paddles can be used, rather than the driver, in the heat of the moment having to work out which two out of the four are the clutch and which are the engine map, while he's trying to avoid the cat litter and possible head-on collisions with his rivals...
Does it really matter?
Ferrari are fiddling with things too! Why does everyone hate Lewis and McLaren, finding any reason to put them down? We were sick of Schumacher winning everything now when we have someone to cheer about again everyone seems to be against him!
He is British and a very good racing driver, possibly the best Brit since Jim Clark.
