Mclaren 'Antler Wings'

Ok so they are better then Honda's effort but still.....Always thought the Mclaren looked great and didnt need all the extra BS on the side to make them go faster. What does everyone else think?

They look very sculptured to me - quiet nice - but haven't really spotted them on the car at different angles

But yes - to much aero clutter on the cars !

I dont have a problem with ugly race cars so I'm happy with them. I know a slick car looks better. But this sport is all about the best. And if the best aero package involves big ears then so be it.

Yeah, it's the actually the best though is it, it's the best within a very funny set of rules. I'd like to see the clutter banned to be honest or the rules relaxed so they can look good and work well.

Totally agree - the cars should be both fast and good looking. Early 90s F1 machines were stunning IMO and I hope the coming regs will bring back better looking cars.

Antlers is more like. The idea is that if ones main rivals vehicle overtakes at a final moment of the race, one may with a vengeful flick of the wrist, plunge these fearful hooks deep into the guts 'n nuts of their fire-breathing beast and then wrench triumphantly aloft its black-blooded, still-pumping heart, spurting forth a vast oily mess in terrible spectacle. The frightfully memorable image of which forever cows all opposition.

I think this goes to show McLaren are winning the development race. McLaren tested a 'Shark Fin' engine cover before Germany, but chose not to use.

They have now come up with 'Dumbo Ears', where as Ferrari have only just tried their 'Shark Fin'.

Just thoughtlessly quoting the F1 website.....I think you will find they are an areodynamic wing. Unless you work for Mclaren and designed them.....then I would have to apologise!

It is a huge shame that, just as the available skills and computing power are allowing very complex CFD analyses to yield devices such as McLaren's "ears" that the FIA's new rules will try to turn back the clock, aero-wise.

It is a shame, because it is the principal area of competitive differentiation amongst the teams; because it is an area in which F1 is still genuinely cutting edge relative to the rest of the world; and because the ability to tailor a vehicle's aerodynamic performance to the prevailing requirements will be critical in the fuel-poor future we all face.

Rather than banning all this "clutter", the FIA should be bringing F1 cars into our schools, with enthusiastic engineers demonstrating how their technical expertise makes a different.

But, no matter. The quality of decision-making in the FIA is no better (or worse) than in, say, national politics.
