A few years ago I got taken to a historic meet at Silverstone. The sound of a BRM changing down for Copse was one of the reasons I started racing....

My text message tone on my mobile is a Matra leaving the pit lane.... If you have to ask, you'll never know....

Would have to agree with you Tom, they sound amazing! Although to be fair the current Le Mans leaders dont provide much in the way of sound

Can I also suggest the Mazda Furai? Hopefully it will be a race car of the future!

Not when you are trying to get some sleep at 5am in a tent just 12 feet from the track they're not. At that state of play, I really liked the whispering Audis !! I ought to be biased toward Corvette, but I felt that the Lambo was he best sounding car at LeMans.

I have a old vinyl record of grand prix cars being driven around Monaco. One clip of Mike Hawthorn (IIRC) recorded inside a Ferrari is pure magic, from the pit lane at low revs increasing to a howl up to Casino Square and onward - wind niose the works. I still love the sound of a Cosworth DFV, and the 12 cylinder Ferrari in the 90's was something else. The later V10s made my ears buzz with the shrill pitch of the revs, so not so good for me.

Whatever, when I hear any of them crisply notching through the box and disappearing into the distance, I still get goosebumps - especially if it is the sound of just one engine.

Being a lover of V8s, I would suggest a Panoz LMP1. Oh and John Foulston's old CanAm car used to sound pretty good when I used to see it at Brands.

I had the honour to be standing at the Honda area at Goodwood FoS when they fired up the 16-cylinder F1 engine. Prolonged deafness was by no means too high a price to pay for the thrill. I never heard it on circuit - which is just as well as I'm partially deaf anyway - but boy! what an experience.

The other ones that were notable was the pre-war Merc GP cars, also at the FoS, and also right beside me.

But for sheer spine-tingling excitement, especially given its history: the Mille Miglia winning Mercedes SLR, as driven by Moss and navigated by Dennis Jenkinson. I saw it at Silvestone on a demo run driven by Moss (can't remember the actual occasion) and it made me go all cold. If anyone hasn't read Jenkinson's article on the race, you've missed out on one of the best bits of motoring literature around. And seeing, and hearing, the car accelerate along the home straight brought it all to life.

Not a car but the most astounding noise I've ever heard from an engine has to be the mid '60s vintage 350cc, 6 cylinder Honda GP bike I saw demonstrated by Jim Redman at Cadwell Park a few years back.

Spine tingling doesn't even come close, for that matter neither does loud... :-)
