Anyone taken part in the MR2 Challenge?

Considering for next year - wonder what peoples experience of this series was?

Good racing?
Good value?
As cheap as the website suggests?
What sort of budget is required for year 1? Something like £5k inc car & trailer?

Looks like I have found someone who can answer my questions!

Desparte to race, helped out with a friend this weekend running a Ginetta G20 after he broke way from the Tuscan Challenge and I just feel tht he moved away from the tvr's nd so can I.

Budget is tight so need to convince the mrs that it really can be done for the £££ I say.

Watched a few vids on You tube from the IMOC site and the grids look full which is always good and I suspect times close, particularly toward the end of the season?

Will you be at Brands?

There are 2 different MR2(only) racing series
MR2 Racing
Mk1's only
MR2 Championship
Mk1,2 & 3 (for next year)

Great Racing, very close grid of mixed abilities & experience
Good Value, Cars are inexpensive to buy, spares are inexpensive and limits on mods keep the cost down and the grid close.
Cars can be bought race ready for £1500 upwards, may need a little tidying, but look beyond the snobbery of some and you can have a race winner.

We are at Snetterton October 19th came along and have a chat and a drink. Let me know if you want tickets, we should have a couple spare.

The bumper appears to be slightly non-symetrical. FFS man have you no pride.

Has anybody compared the price of running one of the MK1 MR2's against the MAX5 series?

Obviously the MK2 MR2s will be faster so that be an extra pull towards the MR2's

Thanks for tht, cant make Snett (but up there on 24th on a track day) but will be at Brands for whichever series it is in November.

No race series can be done in the first year for £5k unless you stop after a few races... which is fair enough. Even the most pikey of race kit and an easy access ARDS test will cost £1000. Unless of course you can borrow the kit or hav it already.

Cars, well remember to a large exstent you get what you pay for and in club racing thats not usually allot, if its cheap its tired or badly prepared to start with. Either way your going to have to keep spending on it to keep it running let alone be competitive. Nothing wrong in buying a shed just be ready for the silly things that go wrong with cheap cars.

Ultimately however, you have to start somewhere and the sooner you start the sooner you learn and this is as good a series as any. But £5k all in and a full first season of racing... no chance.

MX5 vs Mk1 MR2's
MX5 are quicker, handling similar, already built MX5's are around £5k last time I looked.

You might be surprised. The MX5's seem to be quicker at most circuits, they were even quicker round Silverstone national when they were on track together for Power nights.

You have to admit mate that most of them do look a little battle scarred.....

The one that was parked next to us at the Silverstone Power nights meeting had rusty discs etc and had been touched up with an aerosol that was nearly matched the rest of the vehicle.

This is something i've always wanted to do, get involved in a low budget motorsport. Have been considering getting into the Toyota Sprint Series, not racing as such, more like time trials, but you need no race license to enter, and costs are stupidly cheap, and car doesn't have to meet many criterea, so no roll cages etc.

i know its not the same, but considering i already own a Toyota, i think a budget of £2000 should be easily achieved. don't even need a trailer, just drive to and from events and its an easy way to decide if motorsport is right for you.

Yes I considered Sprinting, they have a TVR sprint series but I cant help but think that a Tamora is not best suited to a cold, one lap type event.

PLus I think I would prefer the buzz of wheel to wheel combat as it were.

So you park next to one MR2 at Power Nights and suddenly we are all Banger Racers with poor standard of presentation ?

Pretty much yep, seeing as you are labouring the point.

The one that parked next to me seemed to be a fairly representative example.

Had to move my car to one side in case any of the rust germs jumped accross onto my car.

I take it the brake discs were only rusty on the edges and on the centre? Nowt to be worried about really.

Mk1 MR2 body panels are not all that common these days and with it being a budget race series I can imagine people would rather save their money and fix what they can themselves or just have to make do with the odd coloured panel and a home done paint job.
