Standard engines and gearboxes DEFEATS THE WHOLE POINT OF FORMULA 1! If I want single chassis, single engine races I'll watch GP2.
Why would manufacturers (or anyone, actually) want to be in Formula 1 if there's no technical challenge? That's always been the thing that's so cool and attractive about F1.

Mosley has run out of ideas, and forgotten what makes the sport interesting. At the end of the day, if McLaren have an income of whatever amount from sponsorship etc. just because they can't spend it on an engine doesn't mean they won't spend it somewhere. And unless there is a limit on the amount of sponsorship a team can raise that will ever be thus.

in the meantime, he (or the FIA) want to unfreeze certain engine freeze rules over the winter (presumably only for some competitors) so that power is equalised between teams for '09.

Indeed. D'you think this could be the reason why he's proposing it? Merc and some other manufacturers (with the exception of one) have been highly critical of Mosley in the past and Mosley is not one to forget imagined slights, let along real ones. There is little doubt that those not awarded with the contract will see little point in staying. Given his admitted favouritism for Ferrari, if he sources the engine from them what we'll have is Formula FiAt, a sort of open-wheeled Tuscan Challenge. Not that I'm critical of the TC. It was the most exciting motor racing forumla I've ever seen, but F1 it is not. Part of its attraction and fascination was that most drivers didn't seem to know what they were doing. The cheating was all part of the fun. I remember on car overtaking around four others along the short Home Straight at Brands being cheered as we all knew the engine was non-kosher.Mercedes will not, if the financial crisis continues, move on to another senior motorsport formula but pull out entirely and concentrate on saloons.
Even in the days of the DFV we had half-empty grids so such a move is not the panacea that he is suggesting it is.
There's a lot resting on FOTA. If they can't agree and Mosley/FiA make the changes then there's every chance that F1 as we know and love it will be dead.
I can't help worrying that F1 as the pinnacle of motor sport might be at an end. We might, like the man that never was see some effigy in its place for a while but the sham will soon be discovered.
F1 is moving away from its fan base. No GP in Britain. It's not so much F1 shooting itself in the foot as shooting itself in the head.
