Have you got an international license yet Mickey?

If they are funding you then go for it. its known as a very good chassis

If your serious about a career in Motorsport you need to get into a recognized single seater series, and win it..

But it will take serious commitment, and a lot of cash... the chances of success even with a lot of talent are limited, but if you dont try you dont get... Its also worth having a backup plan you've still got to make a living if you dont end up as the next hamilton...:-)

If you've any budget left after that, then there should be a few TVR base cars in some endurance races that might help with the profile

which series is that running in. not sure how high profile club F3 is.. if thats it. You need to do a lot of research on making sure every pound you spend is giving you the best opportunity, and exposure.

How fast are you??? How much money have you got?

An age old prob Mickey, and one thats hit many talented drivers.

you have to decide how much you can bring to the team, arrange a test, then see if you/they will go for it. A test doesn't mean a drive and being the fastest aint what its about.

Its the fastest guy with the most money! The money being first. The team has to get funding the same as anyone else and the first job of the drivers is to bring sponsors, then to get wins (which brings more coverage/sponsors), then to help develop next years car.

Your current sponsors are the best bet...see if they can come with you. What do they get out of it. Is the series tellevised, will you be interviewed (ie will you be on the podium) will you go for it 100% (no probs on that score with your familly behind you the way they are).

But if they have seen something in you others will. The first drive aint necessarilly the best ride. It also depends on luck and wether they like you. If they do and your current sponsors go with you...

Good luck with it anyway. Let us know how you get on.

They've only head hunted you if they're paying! Ask them how many other drivers they've made this offer to. Teams will look for drivers lower down that have either 1) some talent or 2) the money (or preferably both wink) and offer them tests etc.

Saloon racing to F3 is a bit of jump and if you want to do it make sure you get lots of testing before the start of the season. Use any opportunity to learn the engineering/set up side of single seater racing and you will find the driving easier. If you've not already read it Carol Smith's Drive To Win is a very good primer.

Sorry to sound like I'm putting a downer on it but motor racing is a cynical world. Still it is a good compliment that you've made it on to the radar of someone like Dallara.

So this thread is finding out who the people that moaned about our car this year. What ever you say, we built the car to the regs in this year, if you buy or build a car MAKE sure your you read the regs as we did and don't moan when you are beaten in class. Ntel, I was offered your car in 06 but did not purchase it from HB plainly cos it was not fast enough for the class rule's. Not having a go but we read the rule's corectly and won the class. John.

I think you have the wrong end of the stick. I'll answer that, properly, when I get back from work later.
In order to keep Leighs thread "on track" I have replied here.

You seem to have taken exception with me saying that Neils post, in the other thread, was a "Top Post". Why? I don't know. I happen to agree with everything he said in terms of career opportunities and paths, as well as his comments regarding Class C. I also thought he put it over very well, hence my comment, "Top Post"

You said above,"So this thread is finding out who the people that moaned about our car this year". That was obviously aimed at me, which I resent.

Let us get one thing absolutely straight. I have NOT, nor ever, had a problem with either you, Micky or your car. If I had, then I would definately not have offered to loan you rear suspension parts off my car after your crash at Anglesey. As it happened they didn't fit but the offer was made.

As I openly explained to you, and Leigh, at the dinner, the only problem I had, was with the rules. I believe that you ran your car, all season, within those rules and also Micky drove it particulaly well. As I stated, for a 2.9L V6 to be able to compete with a 3.9 or 4.0L V8, we would have had to spend many thousands of pounds on our engines and for what? To end up with a fast car that would probably go pop after a few races. I don't have kind of money.

At the end of the day, I don't give a flying fk who races in which class. I'm a middle aged fat bloke, probably in the middle of a mid life crisis, who is doing what he has always wanted to do, and not taking it too seriously. Yes, to win a class race every now and again would be nice but its not the end of the world if I don't.

So, if your looking for somebody to blame for being moved into class B then look elsewhere.

After all that, I still wish you all the best in finding a way to further Mickys racing career.

Now, I've had a ste day, I'm full of a cold, so I'm going to snort a few lemsips up a £10 note, sup a few "whisky all ins" and sod off to bed. Good night!

6 long months till next season. I think we all need to get some karting in. We will ensure that the rules make any under 18 run with 50kg of ballast to offset our Guts.

I hope Richard isn't reading this ( I NEVER MENTIONED THE WORDS MIDDLE AGED AND FAT BLOKE). Definitely another bking from him on the cards now hehe

Hope you're feeling better soon dave. Chin up mate. Its only Racing.

How about BGT!!!! only 150k budget, oh and you need a car (150k) LOL.. I was realistic about my success in class C last year, I also have been offered drives, GT4, Britcar, even had a call from a bloke who used to run seat sport and was thinking about setting a team up, BUT ALL WANTED MONEY... and lots of it, "hey Sam, wanna drive in our Maserati, do you a deal, need someone to look after the car" But, it will still be £££££.
As for a Tuscan, all I can tell you is they are brilliant to drive, the AJP is fantastic and goes like hell, GO ON JOHN, buy the boy a Tuscan, If he beats all in A and finishes 20 secs ahead then he will be noticed, Bring on next year, looking forward to racing with mickey again, fingers crossed.

Sam

wedges are bad enough but an MGB GT would definitely be a backward step.

Sam is quite correct, there are plenty of 'offers' of drives about, but all require budget. There is the odd driver on things like the Red Bull scholarship scheme, but otherwise all drivers in F3 pay for their drives. Most have wealthy families, the odd one a wealthy backer. The same is true all the way up to GP2 - >1 million Euros either from Dad, a sponsor or the scholarship scheme. If its a sponsor then Dad will need to sign a guarantee unless all the money is paid up front. Its a seriously tough challenge.

I'd say Mickey's best chance of success, unless John has a few million, is to get on the scholarship scheme. To do that he needs to win a recognised feeder series asap and win it convincingly.

I don't know what the 'Dallara deal' is, but given all the above and that Dallara are a chassis manufacturer not a team, I'd guess its an offer to buy a drive in someones car, probably in Club F3 given the budgets.

I think money spent on that would be better going towards a season in National Formula Ford.

You did ask for views and this is just my opinion which you can take or leave.

I'd also suggest speaking to someone like Nathan Freke, who won FF a couple of years ago, or Jonathon Cocker, who has made a success of GT racing at a very young age. No idea how you get in touch with the latter, but we could put you in touch with Nathan if that helps.

To get a nose in at F.Renault you need £100k and a lot of talent. You can get a drive for £150k so long as you know that a car has 4 tyres and a steering wheel.

The running costs for F3 are actually about the same for F.Renault, the difference in cost is that EVERY session, whether test (of which you'll do maybe an average of one a week over the year) or race weekend is on fresh rubber, that accounts for the vast majority of the increase of approx £100k to get into F3 from F.Renault. By which time you're not far of what Spanks has outlined for a Formula 2 budget.
