It's not that bad - just thrown in at the deep end - not enough time testing and given the B car. Alonso has the pick of the crop, mechanics, chassis, developements and he's one of the best drivers on the grid.

No team is 100% equal even Mclaren - sometime you just gel better with a mechanic/engineer and those relationships are vital.

You see it across motorsport - and always wonder why one driver is doing better than the other.

I would say that Piquet belongs somewhere like Toro Rosso, but they've turned it around, so they might even be too good. It would have made marketing sense for Bourdais to go to Renault and to really see where he stands, but apparently Flavio's got a problem with him.

I wanted Piquet to make good this season, but he looks pretty hopeless.

I know, he's had a bad year, but I'd give him another. No more than that though. The same for Kimi though, but for a different reason. Heikki has to prove his ability, whereas Kimi has to prove his motivation.

I'd give him another shot. Some people can just jump in and drive anything, whereas some people take time to settle in and need things "just so". Boths sets can ultimately be very fast. I think it's harsh to get shot of anyone after a single year, but F1 is a tough world and so you'd be lucky to get more than two.

Think of Massa's early career compared to his driving most of this year, some people take time to get into their stride in F1, others don't of course...

The thing with Massa was that when he drove Saubers he drove at 10 tenths and over but had to learn that you can achieve better if you minimised the work rate in the cockpit ie. the smooth is fast cliche, he could achieve better results by driving 8/9 tenths.

Massa reminds me of Casey Stoner. Stoner in his rookie year was quick but had plenty of offs and I'm sure we'll see the same progression with Jorge Lorenzo.

Piquet didn't know the circuits, had a car that for most of the year was a pig (look at Alonso's early season results) and latterly knew he had to bring the thing home to keep his job.

Wait! Have I just found myself defending Piquet Jr?!!!

As to Stoner and Lorenzo - they at least had decent machinery in their rookie years....
