The new dragster re-invokes Ford’s classic Cobra Jet name first used in the late 1960s. This latest version is powered by a 5.4 litre V8 making 428hp, and comes with a special cold-air induction system, six speed manual gearbox, stainless steel racing headers, 9” rear axle assembly, one piece driveshaft, and adjustable upgraded suspension with drag race spring kit.
There’s no mistaking the Cobra Jet’s purpose with its classic drag-racer stance emphasised by 15” x 4” ‘skinnies’ up front and fat “15 x 10” Goodyear Eagles at the rear.
Unfortunately, just 50 examples of the Cobra Jet Mustang will be built, and the cars will apparently get a serial number but no VIN plates, so it’s unlikely that any will make it onto the road. Shame…
The new Cobra Jet joins the Mustang FR500S, FR500C and the FR500 GT4, GT3 and GT models – all factory produced racers designed to give customers a ‘racing ladder’ all the way from grassroots to the Grand-Am Rolex GT series.

I think they are going back to the 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday' era of the 60's/70's where people would race these muscles cars at the strip with full factory backing or dealership backing in the bid to sell cars.Ford USA have a huge amount of money soaked up in Drag Racing.

I think the other main reason is the fact Mopar have bought out a new Challenger Drag Pak that is in direct competition.
I can see Ford/Mopar/GM competing with this quite a lot..

I wasn't saying it was a bad idea - just surprised they will make and sell a complete car like that - I would have thought a better option would be to have a kit of parts available to turn your car into a drag racer - gets you around lots of legislation as not part of the homologation package.
Although, does the fact this doesn't have a VIN mean it isn't being sold as a "road car" at all - it is a pure competition vehicle?

They do offer all the bits as parts from the motorsport catalouge, these 50 cars are probably a sort of advertisement for these parts. Ford did this before with the Cobra R back in about 1999 or 2000, they only made a few of those as actual cars but you could build your own just by ordering the various Ford Motorsport parts from the catalouge.Although, does the fact this doesn't have a VIN mean it isn't being sold as a "road car" at all - it is a pure competition vehicle?

2170lb according a race calculator with a 10.00et and 428hp...I doubt it weighs that much, a light doorslammer must be touching 2300/2500lbs...
there was a program on discovery last night (Rides - hot rod powertour) and they talked about ford doing similar things in the past with the BFX Comet (I think that was what it was called?) - Ford only made 15 and wouldn't sell it to you unless you signed a contract PROMISING to race it!

AFX?Altered Factory Experimental? Became Funny Car eventually...
A class were wheelbases were altered, rear wheels moved forward to help weight transfer etc.

no, it was definately BFX - it had it written on the front, the comet bit might have been wrong (?) - they also had a Galaxie which was a similar thing, one of the race on sunday, sell on monday ideas.
