Kers - who is using what?

It is interesting that two such differnt technologies are being used for Kers, with flywheel systems from the likes of Flytek, vying with electrical storage. The fact that a BMW mechanic was taken to hospital last summer for treatment following an electric shock received while testing Kers gives a clue which way they are going. Anybody know which way any of the other teams are going?

Williams are going with flywheel. Think they are the only ones, as far as I know anyway.

Mclaren, Ferrari and Honda all had high voltage stickers on at the recent test.

All the rest are using electric with some kind of battery or capacitor storage.

Williams - Flybrid
Honda - own design
Toyota - own? or with Denso?
Ferrari/Renault- Magneti Marelli
McLaren - ? (own designs most likely)
Red Bull - ? (own designs most likely)
BMW - ? (own designs most likely)

Someone in there probably working with Zytek and maybe even Bosch quietly?

No doubt they're keeping a pretty damn close eye on both systems and storage types incase one is obviously superior.

I don't know this has got to be one of the strangest new mandated technologies.

Yeah, they did. I think Red Bull are also using a battery one, there was a chemical fire at the MK factory a while ago. There was a rumour that it was to do with KERS.

Yes, and by all accounts it's....er....not very good at the moment.

They may even ditch it next year.

Can't wait for this technology, hope it works and we don't get mechanics being run over then electrocuted, then set on fire with a fuel rig problem, will be something out of Mad Max films being a mechanic in an F1 garage! I'd want danger money.

It's not exactly new, which is the constant whine of most naysayers, but it's to be pushed in a harsh environment of an F1 car for the first time. Should be fun to watch

McLaren are using all of their expertise with McLaren Electronic Systems (the people who make the standard ECU for all the teams) and even then are co-developing it with Freescale Semi Conductors. Don't know about most of the others, but Honda have done their own design and sound pretty confident it will work

Although as pointed out it was actually what is commonly called humor...


As it happens although Kers may be technically interesting I fail to see why its use should be mandated in what after all is supposed to be a sport.

It's not mandated and there have even been suggestions that it might not be worth the weight penalty.

Yeah the joke went completely over the top of my head

KERS use isn't mandated, but most of the teams appear to have decided that it's not worth being caught months behind in development when the time comes that having KERS is faster over a single lap.

Indeed, until now it has been banned. Even under the '09 regs, however, it's limited.
