Croft under threat. This country needs to change.

A guy I know quite well lives next to Croft - he drives down the access road to get to his house.
He loves it - gets free tickets whenever he wants, instructs at the circuit and so on.
Lovely house, and from his point of view has the added bargain and added value of a race track at the end of his garden.
I hate these to$$ers that move next to a race track and then moan. If they didn't know it was there they should have been sueing the solicitor for not doing his searches properly.
Its like the whingers that restricted the stage rallying at Oulton Park.
On the other hand, look at Mallory, drive down a normal housing estate type road and straight into the circuit....

Whilst I am obviously 'against' these people's case it should be remembered that Croft is one of the few places where it would be very easy for them to have moved to relatively recently and not have expected there to have been a race circuit.
I can't remember the dates (and am too lazy to google right now) but the track was closed for quite some years, during which they could have moved into the area.
As said though i think that they should just have been told to go forth and multiply.

In 1947 businessman and councillor John Neasham acquired the lease to the land and formed Darlington and District Aero Club. However, the club folded after only 5 years and the airfield fell into disuse.
During the late 1940s and in to the 50s, Darlington & District Motor Club held Motor Race Meetings on various layouts utilising the runways and perimeter roads and then in 1962 Bruce Ropner and fellow enthusiasts bought half the venue at public auction, completing a track on the site in July 1964. The first meeting on 3 August 1964 attracted a crowd of between 30,000 and 50,000 people.
Over the years the circuit has played host to many famous names and has hosted national and international meetings. However, slowly attention focussed on circuits in the south of England such as Brands Hatch and Silverstone and in late 1967 Croft began hosting rallycross. The events were utilised by ITV's World Of Sport and were televised live. Whilst Rallycross was considered to be a winter sport, circuit racing continued. By 1981 the profitability had fallen and with the circuit requiring a total resurfacing, it closed to circuit racing. Local farmer, George Shield, agreed a lease to run Rallycross and, in conjunction with Darlington & District Motor Club, successfully developed the track for this sport. Croft held the FIA Inter-Nations cup events of 1987 and 1990 and a round of the European Rallycross Championship.
With the attention brought by rallycross the decision was taken to reintroduce tarmac racing and became a popular host of motorcycle and car racing.

In 1997 the circuit underwent a major transformation - the circuit was extended to 2.127 miles (3.423 km) and new pits, paddock complex, control tower and spectator areas were constructed.

I don't think there should be grounds for complaint, but it is interesting to note that they are complaining about track days rather than race events - that indicates to me that they knew full well that there was a race track nearby when they bought their house, but that it was not used as much as ti now is, meaning any inconvenience they feel is now much larger than it was. Would people have any grounds if they moved in next to a restaurant which was only open on Saturday and Sunday lunch times but then extended opening to everyday and evenings? The effect would be comparable, but I doubt any compensation would be granted in that case.
What's more galling is this.
Paul Bird - "This can't be allowed to happen and we will do whatever we can in our power to stop these people" Bird said. "This place was here long before them and if they don't like it, they should move."
Pointing out that the family, who live around 300 metres from the circuit, moved there due to a former relative gaining employment at Croft, event sponsor Larry Carter is hopeful their appeal will be successful.
Unbelievable.

All the info. i should have Googled
Thanks for that. I remember going to the TVR meeting they had there just before the 'new' track was laid.I try to keep out of these topics as much as possible as they do nothing good for my blood pressure.
Ever since that retired army chap almost got Prescott closed down and forever changed Hillclimbing I have a special place for these sort of people in my mind.
That said age has taught me to look at the other person's argument, even if I personally think they should boil their own head.

They are right, that is the place. When I was a kid living in Croft village our school teacher Mrs Cameron lived there and her family worked it as a farm. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&a...
