Roll Cage advice

I'm looking to make a bespoke cage for my Scimitar & wondering what grade/OD-ID of material to use.

I don't want scaffold grade


This will be a cage used for sprints/hillclimbs- not for showing off purposes

Should be CDS (Cold Drawn Seamless) Carbon steel.

5mm Gauge, but i'm not sure of the outside diameter...

Anyone else help?

Latest 09 blue book CDS cold drawn seamless OD 45mm x 2.5mm wall or OD 50mm x 2mm wall.
if your having one of the usual roll cage suspects make it, they will already know this though.

if not you will need to get a copy of the blue book or download the specs online as the MSA specify the angles and radii of bends, joints etc etc.

their are a number of guys that have had cages made for most of the scimitar range. which do you have?

MSA competitors and officials yearbook 2009 is what you are looking for. The other thing is about running events on the public road and getting authorisation to do so (so will not be much use in designing roll cages).

This is on area I'd get done by an expert company Get a full cage too.

Scimitar SS1 or GTE/SE6 etc?

Razza987 from here races an SS1 and would be the man to speak to about the provenance of his cage...

Protection and Performance in Skipton produced the cages that myself, Raz and others have for the SS1s, sure theyd take on a GTE. Iain Daniels engineering have done many GTE and coupe cages and Paul Turnbulls ornage Swinging Sixties SE5a cage was done by Custom Cages. its a full on multi point kiddies climbing frame like the P&P SS1 versions

Full cage in my GTE. Has a Fabricage Sticker on it. (Not sure if they are still going). Not as substantial as Paul's Orange one, but still a full cage.

Iain Daniels fitted my cage (windscreen out job). I'd go for a full one, and have experience on it working

The best tube spec to use is T45 Carbon steel. It's a British spec used extensively in professional motorsport. You can use much thinner tube eg. 45 O/D x 1.6 mm (16 swg) as it's so much stronger than mild steel tube eg CDS2. The weight saving is huge.

In a lot of cases people are moving over to 15cdv6 these days. As you say, T45 is a British spec but I think 15cdv6 is a euro spec which has a better range of availability and comparable properties.
