Nigel Mansell believes that Lewis Hamilton's world title is "20 per cent less credible" than his own because of the fewer cars on the grid in 2008 compared to 1992.

Quoting Mansell in an interview:

"I mean no disrespect to Lewis, but what's the point of a championship when you only have 18 or 20 cars running?
When I won the title, I beat 25 other cars and that makes Lewis' title 20 per cent less credible than mine."

Call the men in the white coats......

lol! Mansell won the championship with as great a car advantage as any driver has enjoyed in the history of the sport.

Senna won the chamiopnship with a similar car advantage but he had to race Prost for it - don't recall Mansell winning many races as Prost's teammate in 1990.

When Mansell won the championship there were 4 teams capable of wining a race, same with Lewis although in reality 5 teams won races in 2008. Mansell just had to deal with more moving chicanes.

This reasoning also makes all the Schumacher championships pretty worthless - check out the years he won, mostly only ten or eleven teams competing. So there, Mansell truly is the greatest, and Schumacher was ste. Such weird thinking....

Only 1 team really - Mclaren only won thanks to Senna and/or if Williams had issues and Benetton only scored a lucky win at Spa.

He also had to carry the weight of that moustache, whereas Lewis is shaven, making Nige's championship even more credible.

The older I get, the faster I was..............

You can only beat the opposition that you have, that's why anyone with half a brian realises that trying to make comparisons between different era's is meaningless.

I guess "our Nige" needs to work that out.

What other team could have won the championship in 92?
THe Mclaren had an over weight V12 compared to the Renault V10 and the FW14B was on average 1.5 seconds quicker than anything else!
Mansell often mouths off like this,as much as I loved red five as anyone else, he can be a bit of a c***sometimes

He is not a giant , the greats dont feel the need to constantly defend them selves or to belittle the achievements of later competitors , he muct have a serious lack confidence and self worth

You assume of course that he has been quoted in context....

Has he constantly defended himself? If you've met him, you'll already know that he doesn't lack self confidence, although of late he's really mellowed and a lot of that bulldog mentality has softened. Back in the early '80s he was incredibly focussed to hang onto his Lotus drive and it is true that in those days in particular he did feel the need to prove his worth to both himself and the world at large. He doesn't have anything to prove now, he did all that by beating Prost and Senna in cars that were not always the class of the field.

which to me smacks of lack of confidence

I don't know, perhaps the interviewer phrased a question in a way to achieve such a response. I wasn't there. I don't know about you, but I don't always believe what's written in the press. There's another side to the Jade Goody story for instance that may never come out

True enough , but he always struck me as a whiner with a huge chip on his shoulder thats why i feel he was not pushed into an answer like this or miss quoted

Think is though, Lewis is going to win a lot more than one. yes

It might be fair to say though, that the efforts of the older drivers were greater due to the times and circs they lived in. When you read the stories of people like Nige, and say, Gilles Villeneuve, you realise that there just aren't stories like that any more.

In a recent interview, Keke Rosberg was recounting the incredible hard work he had to do to keep racing and get into F1, and said "honestly, the kids of today have no idea" and of course he would have included his own son in that too.
