F1 Rules change

Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has approved a change to the points systems for this year’s drivers’ championship, which will see the title awarded to the driver with the most race wins. The rest of the standings, from second to last place, will be decided by the current points system.

If two or more drivers finish the season with the same number of wins, the title will be awarded to the driver with the most points, the allocation of points being based on the existing structure...

so the guy who scores most points could very realistically finish second in the championship, but the guy who wins most and retires / crashes in all the other races could win.

I think they should have a point system for the race (as per 2008 season) and have a points system for qualifing, that way teams who dont do well racing but do well qualifing (like BMW and Renault) will still be in with a chance.

Surely its decided by the number of wins, if the points are equal, not just the outright number of wins?

So if you use these rules for the previous seasons

2008 - Felipe (with 6 wins)
2007 - Kimi (with 6 wins)
2006 - Schumacher (with 7 wins)

So it would have made a difference. I dont see how it's going to make overtaking more prevalent though, it's hard enough as it is, how is this going to make it easier? It just means there'll be riskier moves, which is good for TV I guess.

I'd like to see a BTCC type event, i.e. sprint races etc.
