2.8 JTD Motorhomes

Morning chaps.

Thinkng about going down the motorhome route for this year. I know some of you have one. Im looking at one of the 2.8 TD Manuals with a garage on the back. From those of you that have one, what are they like for towing? I willbe pulling about 1500kg.

Forget the garage. you will find that the vehicle is very close to GVW without any tuscan tools etc. better off with a normal motor home and a well equipped trailer.

I quite fancy having an area which can get dirty and keep all the crap from inside the motorhome itself. I dont have that many tools anyway! ( ones that I know how to use at least!)

Umm I thought they was mainly used for people to put in a small bike. surly I bike would weigh more than a few tools. and a set of spare wheels.

But you wouldn't be towing a car on a trailer if you have a bike. The problem with most European motorhomes is they are near or over the gross train weight when towing a trailer and anything much over 800-1000kg. You also have to be careful about axle weights as well.

Hi Owen, thought you would get one, makes life so much better for the family etc.. Ours is a 5t MGW model and with a tuscan and trailer weighing in no more than 2t I am sure it gets close on weight. But Tony will have most of the tools anyhow, only thing with a garage is you will get people who ask if they can sleep in it rather than staying in the tent!!! LOL

Hi Owen, I use an Autotrail, 6.4m long, motorhome (without garage)based on a 2.8 JTD Fiat Ducato. Pulls the race car no problem. Will go up most hills we find on main roads and motorways at 60mph in 4th gear. 5th gear is a waste of time unless the road is flat!

CHeers Dave, thats all I wanted to check really. I would love a 3.0 like Sams but they are prob outside my budget, therefore the 2.8 is the next option. Having been used to towing with the Range Rover ( 80 leptons + quite easily if needed) I wanted to check that I will be able to pull with the 2.8. I dont intend to load the garage up too much, just a place to keep the dirty stuff away from the main part of the motorhome.

Owen, if you go for one with a garage, make sure it has an ALCO Chassis otherwise the tow bar will be a nightmare (and expensive) to fit. Also it will have a big overhang and if you have a tyre rack on the trailer there will be a hell of a lot of weight at the back. It could put the rear of the motorhome on its arse.

hI Guys

more advice if poss.

Today In went to look at 2 models both new but last years modeals therefore big discounts.

One was Fiat Based 3.0 with a towing capacity of 1400kg. I quite liked it as its 160 bhp and a garage. However the guy in the sales place told me that I would be beter off with a 2.4 transit based one. although 140 bhp it has twin rear wheels ( 4 on each axkle) therefore will tow 2 tons easily ( according to the sales guy!)

Now i get the benefit of having the twin wheel version, but im slightly concerned about the 140 bhp towing a trailer.

Does anyone have any experience of these tranny based motorhomes? common sense would say 160bhp.......confused....

I used to have a 2.4L TD Tranny but is was only 100 hp and couldn't pull the skin off a rice puddin'!

My 2.8L JTD (5 years old) is only 130bhp but it works well! Max towing weight on mine is 1800Kg on a single axle.

just one bit of extra info you may want to consider before buying.
Most motor homes only have 2 wheel on the back, due to if they have 4 wheel as the back, they are class as commercial, and you will get stung on the toll booths if you take them to Europe.
I friend too a 2 wheel one to the south of France and it was 50 Euro, but then got a bigger 4 wheel one but it cost him over 500 Euro's in tolls.
