Sorry folks, but , as most of you know, I am trying to retain the proper spelling of the word "licence" on PH.

It looks like a losing battle, I'm afraid.

(Watch out anyone who spells "programme" the wrong way too) .

I've just read this - to clarify - if you score lots of points and win the title, you pay loads for the licence.

If you have a st season because you're a poor driver or in a poor team, you pay very little.

So, potentially, a good driver could pay more than some of the mobile chicanes out there....

You can kind of see the sense in it though - if you're a successful driver then chances are you'll be earning more in salary and sponsorship. So although they might be paying more money than a back-marker, it might be a smaller percentage of their earnings.

What if you're an outstanding driver in a crap team? (EG Senna in a Lotus)....

Not sure I'm with you?

If you're good enough to get in the points, then chances are you're good enough to get sponsorship. So you are getting more income because you're scoring more points, and you're paying more for your licence because you're scoring more points.

I'm sure it isn't a perfect system, and I'm sure there could be some anomalies.

It's a tax, pure a simple.

A licence is to show you have the qualifications to race. The drivers should pay for the cost of the admin. Even if we have a full grid of 26 drivers, I feel sure that Mavis could cope quite well all on her own. So it is a way of increasing the costs of motor racing. Tax the drivers who will then, if they are the rich ones, demand that the team they drive for pays their fees. The only ones who will have to put their own hand in their pockets are the ones at the bottom of the ladder who will struggle to make ends meet in any case.
