BBC to replay classic races before each GP?

Just got this on my Facebook message inbox from the Senna fanclub:


OK Guys and Girls, there are now only FOUR days left till the start of the new 2009 season!

So I will share a little secret with you all...
As you may or may not know during the glory days of Ayrton's career, F1 was televised live on TV on the BBC over here in the UK from about 1979 to 1996.

After 1996, the broadcasting then switched to ITV for many years until last year when BBC decided to put us all out of our misery and get the rights back in time for the 2009 season this year!

So what does this mean for all you fanatical Ayrton Senna fans?
Well, somewhere in London there's a huge room full of videotapes spanning over 16 years of some of the greatest Formula one races the world has ever seen (including EVERY race Ayrton Senna ever took part in!)

Now F1 is back on the BBC, someone has found the key to that huge F1 library and has just opened its doors!

Slowly, bit by bit, all the classic races which made Ayrton Senna the true legend of the sport are being released again for the first time in many years!

Before each GP weekend, the BBC will pick out the most exciting races from past events

So log onto the official BBC website now and relive the magic of Ayrton's time in Formula One when real legends battled eachother for victory!

The BBC do not own any of this footage. It is actually owned by FOCA and licensed to braodcasters. ITV had access to all this stuff but chose not to show much of it (possibly becasause they didn't want to draw unfair comparisons with the contemporary F1 scene).

BBC do have more of a sense of history about sport and it will be great if they do show some classic moments from the period they broadcast their original "Grand Prix" highlights show - which actually started in 1978.

I'd also like it if they could get hold of the pre-FOCA era recordings (which are, admittedly, few and far betrween) but which are shown on a fairly regular basis on ESPN.
