Watching Top Gear on Dave just now, noticed how intensly Button was concentrating on his lap in the reasonably priced car, and managed a 1:44.7 in the dry. When Hamilton did it he seemed to be messing around and managed to get a similar time on a slippy track.

The difference in class between the two is huge. Jensen's car was miles faster than anyone else's today, in the hands of Hamilton he would've no doubt driven off into the distance. Makes me laugh how everyone is getting so excited over Buttons win today. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he deserved it and it was a good drive, just not worth getting excited over.

I'd counter with the argument that he's been in a decidedly average car despite quite obviously harbouring great talent which he's rarely had a chance to prove for years, and finally has given us fans reason to get excited. We've got a british WDC champion, and another british driver showing he's not the lost hope lots thought he was.

What's not to be enthused about?

It seems we have an opportunity to watch what happens. For the 1st time we could have Jenson & Lewis battling for position.

Lets just watch & enjoy the spectacle of 2 outstanding British drivers at the top of their game.

Jenson's a smooth driver - Lewis is a racer!

In similar cars, I would put money on Lewis every time.

But still a fabulous finish for the whole Braun team!!!

Those old enough to remember 2004 will know that Button can also race, when the need arises. In a season dominated by Ferrari, Button came third overall, was often the only driver in touch with the red cars, and finished a long way ahead of fourth placed Alonso. I recall some good overtaking from Button, and saw it in the flesh at Hockenheim. "Smooth" and "Racer" are not mutually exclusive.

Then again, the current hype is OTT. I reckon 6 races in, when Ferrari and McLaren have got their act together it will be a different story to today.

Yes, it will help them with their close-shaves with the stewards in April

You must not read too much into that ~ Aged, overweight and no doubt far from peak of fitness N. Mansell managed a far from shabby time..... which puts it into better perspective.

Hmmmm .... No its not ..... some poor race readers on PH methinks.

Not with so much Safety Car activity in the race he would not! No one would!!! Without that sc, BUTTON would have put more distance between himself and the also rans.

I have no axe to grind here at all, I had only one bet on the race ~ a substantial one though:

@ 5/2 Hamilton to finish in the points! No crystal ball involved ..... just good judgement...smile

How about giving some credit where it's due... to both Jenson and Lewis ... and in the interests of balance, well done Rubens, Ross and the rest of the team ..... excellent entertainment.

Makes a really refreshing change for some Brits NOT to be 'also rans'. ...thumbup

Roll on next week..... I'm off to count me winnings.... ..smile

Did you even look at the lap times before posting that?

Well if it take the other teams 6 races to get their cars sorted, and Button wins them all, it may be all over with this new "winner take all" system. If the other drivers share the wins between them and Button gets nothing, he could still win the championship.

What you need to understand is that there's almost certainly good reason (or reasons) for the comparatively small race winning margin, and it's nothing to do with Jenson.

Think about it, Brawn have a diffuser design that's being appealed in 2 weeks time for its legality, if they p1ssed off into the distance and won by 45 seconds, there would be a lot more incentive for the FIA to peg them back to ensure they don't run away with the championship by upholding the appeal and banning the diffuser, thus bringing them back towards the rest of the field.

On top of that, the car's only run 7 days of testing so although its reliability has been good so far, its still an unknown, so it makes sense to pace themselves to win by a few seconds rather than push the limit and risk breaking it and not scoring anything. I suspect that had Rubens got away in second off the grid though, we may have seen a significantly faster race pace from Brawn as they'd have had to let the two drivers race to a certain extent

There is no new 'winner takes all system'

Yet anyway

Now here is a good race reader and judge.

Well reasoned that man ~ was about to write something on similar lines plus not over stressing the car and the longevity of its components. Saved me a job..smile

Then again Michael Schumacher got beat by a NASCAR driver fair and square in december there, they were racing in Fiat 500s, but i'm sure from that we can take that the NASCAR driver would be faster in an F1 car too...

Do you honestly think he was holding back!!!????, absolutley no chance, he wasn't about to lose the chance to win just because he thought they might lose the diffuser battle!?

I thought it was the driver with the most wins, who won the championship this year, and the points only mattered if there were two drivers with the same amount of wins?

Nope, that got chucked out this year because they waited until about a week before the season and the teams didn't agree to it.
