Vettel's Penalty

Sorry I don't see why he got the Penalty. Kubica was not halfway alongside as they entered the corner and H closed the door on Vettel. As Brundle said Kubica should have given Vettel more space.

Vettel braked too early to try and call Kubicas bluff, Kubica wrongly thought that Vettel had backed off then suddenly appeared next to him. He apologised for it so he must know he is the wrong, he also apologised to his team over the radio. There is no argument and why he thought he could keep going around the circuit with his left wheel hanging off is beyond me.

It seems slightly odd to me that Vettel got a penalty but not Barrichello.

A racing incedent, both parties did wrong, both parties lost out that is punishment enough. I admired Vettels spirit in trying to keep going and his honesty and willingness to shoulder his part of the blame, its rare to see such a sporting character in F1 these days.

I do however believe his actions (carrying on on 3 wheels) could have endangered others and it is right to penalise him for this. (still made me smile and reminded me of Villeneuve though )

According to that, the team were fined £35,000 for telling him to continue..

his 10 place drop is for the accident as far as i can tell.

In that case, very harsh in my opinion.
Kubica appeared to be the man with the options when it came to the corner & making his move at that point did not seem the wisest option.
I wonder what constitutes a genuine racing accident in the eyes of the stewards these days because I would have thought this was a prime contender.

yeah, i have to say when it happened i thought racing incident..

it does seem very harsh.. and doesnt really help the 'more overtaking/racing' desire for the sport if people only go for sure things because they are frightened of a penalty!

Yes but Barichellos start was a disgrace, he caused the initial mayhem. And his move on Kimi was also questionable.

Do we want these guys to race or not?

I'd have been disappointed to see Vettel simply let Kubica past without putting up some sort of fight.

At the time I thought Vettel was at fault, and that would be my leaning even now as he didn't have the line and lifted/braked early which gave Kubica the corner very early on, though Kubica then didn't give any room for Vettel which he should have known to do; Kubica didn't have the pace to get past and out of the way by the apex. Could let him off slightly as what they can see in their mirrors must be stupidly small (sort it out design team! ).

It's amazing how much difference in grip different patches of track can have, so possibly it's not something Vettel could have avoided and maybe he was slowing the car as much as he could, just don't know without more info.

I'm amazed that there has been a penalty applied for the accident itself though.

i agree with brundle vettel was commited to that line and kubica turned into him.
