I fully understand that the Honda team have been through alot over the past 12 months, having to work with the uncertainty of not knowing if your going to be in a job next month must be terrible and my thoughts go out to each and everyone of them, especially those who will find themseleves being one of the many 100 who are to be losing thier jobs.

However, back to the topic. Why was everyone talking about Brawn GP as if they were a brand new team, especially Eddie 'Professional Arse-Licking' Jordan?

They have been developing that car for 15 months and it shows. They are 3-6 months ahead of many teams in terms of development and with the reduced testing this year that could play into their hands.

This is not a new team, it is just a new name. It might have been saved from going under, but they have not sat still over the winter months. let's give credit where credit is due and for the right reasons. Brawn GP is a bloody good team, not beause of Richard Branson, but because of Honda, Mercedes Benz and each and every one of the team back at the factory.

I salute you for making a bloody quick chassis which both drivers can enjoy this season. You've certainly got a few tech guys in other teams scratching their heads, well done to Brawn GP.

A NEW NAME FOR THE EXISTING WELL RUN HONDA TEAM.

They did not lack skills, it was just money...

They had plenty of money, just a rubbish car, and a not so great engine

Who? Honda? They were one of the (if not the) biggest spenders on the grid.

thats wrong, when honda pulled out, they got their best guys in a shed with a welding torch, some old scaffolding and some bits of last years car, thats what it seems anyway!

Ross Brawn yesterday

I for one think they've done a brilliant job, however im aware that they benefitted from the Honda funded development, I quite like the romantic notion that they pulled it out of the bag at the last minute.

Exactly, Honda have been funding the development of this new chassis, the first new chassis under the directorial control of Ross Brawn, that's why it's so good. I'm just surprised that Honda could not see this was going to happen.

To think that Honda just walked away is not true. I'm not sure if they are still funding the team in anyway behind the scenes, but to take all credit away from Honda is a little harsh.

yes

I loved the whole team's self-deprecating attitude whenever interviewed.thumbup

Quite.

The chassis and aero was developed by Honda but McMerc have parachuted in the engine and gearbox for them, I believe.

So, if this was still the Honda team, that car would have been running a Honda engine and would in all likelihood not be as quick (or reliable) as it is.

I think it was covered on here the other day that the gearbox is honda and not from Mercedes.

As for the engine, with the engine freeze surely the Honda engine would have been on parity for 09.

Honda (and Renault) were given dispensation to upgrade their engines for 2009, Renault have, not sure if the work was ever done at Honda (I think it was?)

But this car is a Brawn development.

Honda only wrote the cheque for most of the production, the same people are working on it now. Just under a different corporate flag, and no to report to in Japan.

Much like if Virgin to put their name to it.

you could use that argument to say that the red-bull car is a Newey then?

or the Mercedes engine is an Ilmore (after all, Merc only brought the company)

Yes but what I am saying is Ross Brawn and the team he put together has been the running force in the new car. So yes he does deserve the credit.

Honda sold the team for £1 and have committed £100m to the team for 2009.
they have walked away in all but funding terms. no one is taking the credit away form honda but when Brawn arrived he took one look at the proposed rules and the car honda were building, scrapped it, told button to chalk off 2008 as expereince and have faith in 09. then brawn and fry went about building a good team and a good car...

honda knew it was going to be good but paniced at the global economic situation and jumped. when their staff at swindon are on a four day week and being offered pay cuts or redundancy, they might be considered as having had little option...

however, to claim that this is just a new name is way off the mark, its a new team, new personnel brought in and new relationships to be forged with engine suppliers amongst others...there is more to it than simply taking an engine out of the mclaren and fitting it into the brawn....

The difference is the team principle. Honda did not give Nick Fry an inch and it showed in the results. For Brawn to have joined Honda there must have been a fundamental shift in how they were going to manage the team - because I simply cannot believe that Brawn would join the team knowing his hands are tied.

There is an alternative theory.

Brawn knew Honda were going to bail, and positioned himself.

I think this was subject to threads at the time, and I agree with you, no way did Brawn go to Honda without a free hand to do what he wanted to.

Brawn is about as new as Midland/Spyker/Force India/Jaguar/Red Bull/Torro Rosso/Renault were & certainly no newer than Honda were when they took over from BAR.

It also galls me when people insist upon calling Sauber BMW "new" - where do they think the word Sauber came from?
