Can someone please explain

Assuming a car whacks into a wall, I assume there would be a great deal of shock to the engine/transmission causing all sorts of internal damage, much like an aircraft engine suddenly stopping, thus it's buggered.
In which case, if the team change the engine/transmission are they penalised or are they given a Mulligan?

You would be surprised at the amount of force an engine and gearbox can take in a shunt and still function perfectly. As long as the mounting points are still useable (for suspension and mounting the engine to the tub) then the unit should be ok.
Obviously if the car has been running upside down for any length of time it would be worth doing a strip down which would pull that engine out of the 'pool' of 8 for the year.

I doubt the engine stops dead in an F1 accident, the car might stop but the wheels will just spin while the engine stalls. Things like the drive shafts would snap 1st if the wheel was grabbed hard enough to stop it dead instantly. Plus hopefully the anti-stall would kick in seperating the engine from the drivetrain.

neither the less, still a good question...
what does happen if a car goes into a wall hard enough to trash the box and/or engine?
does that count against their allocation?
Remember Coulthard crashing in Monaco qualifying last year? The crash damaged his gearbox. They replaced it and were demoted 5 spots on the grid.what does happen if a car goes into a wall hard enough to trash the box and/or engine?
