Why shouldn't it make sense? He's better at writing than he is a TV commentary (IMO).

Yep, perfect sense.

He wasn't very good at commentary but it was clear that he did have some valid points and insight, he just couldn't get this across with a microphone in his hand. Hence once he goes back to what he knows best, and he has 10 minutes rather than a second to collect his thoughts, he shines through.

I know a guy who builds some of the best engines in the World. I wouldn't let him within a mile of a braking system though.

Yes just as I was thawing toward him as a blogger/journo, he goes put his foot (mouth) in it again.

So long as you don't hear him or have to watch him he's alright, in fact, on the strength of his blog, really quite good.
