Poor drivers - in motorsport

How come there are some drivers who appear to be utterly hopeless (let's say for example in F1 if there was a driver who was dangerous, crashed a lot, didn't score well etc.. and often just fell off the track) yet they keep their seat for years (now I am sure it is just a co-incidence that a driver may just be the same nationality as either the team or the engine), yet other drivers who are that bit better, but are still poor, are kicked out after a few races...
So, why are some p**s poor drivers kept on whilst others evicted....

Are you saying the drivers pay loads of cash to drive ?There have been teems in the past with paying No.2 drivers.

He MAY have been the reason for this thread..... Given the cost of writing off a car due to a poor drive and smashing it off the wall, how much does it cost to pay for a drive in an F1 machine?

Well the bigger teams were (a year or two now) spending something around 250 mil so a large portion of that I would assume?!?
If they do go down this 30 mil budget route it is going to introduce a huge number of other teams - 30 mil is so much more achievable than 250 mil!! My only concern is that if you can advertise on an entire car (i.e. by running a team) for 30 mil, then why would you ever be a main sponsor for another team (e.g. Marlboro etc)? I think it may well de-value the sport.
I recon motorsport needs a series that is completely unrestricted (other than safety and width/height/length constrains so you cant build a car the width of the track!!). Would be really quite interesting!!

But that's exactly what I don't get, certain drivers are being talked about in terms of losing their seat due to poor driving whilst others appear to continue to blunder along taking other drivers off, having little/no road awareness and driving like Doris in a Nissan Micra, yet no question of the safety of their seat.....

Isn't that the team giving the driver the bird where the driver does not have a paid position, whereas a paid position is more down to the funding from the driver??Money money and more money. As previously mentioned in all but the very highest level drivers have to pay to drive or bring with them gaurunteed sponsorship. Also with drivers like Nakajima Toyota will no doubt give Williams a 'favourable' deal if they have a Japanese driver.
Also there are many older but 'not that quick' drivers who are very good at car set-up and development who add more to the team in overall pace and driveability of the car than there own results.
