Oil cooler direction

Does it matter on a vertical oil cooler if you go in at the top or bottom,
I cant find much info, but though in at the bottom so you have positive pressure on the pump.

Current install would be easier if in was at the top though, but can plumb it either way.

As you say Leigh, I think its in at the bottom, out at the top.

The cooler can flow in either direction. As air is flowing through the cooler and the medium in the cooler is pumped, rather than the cooler just radiating the heat and relying on convection for flow, it will make very little difference which way its installed.

I knew from a cooling point it would not matter, but thought the pump may have wanted positive pressure to push agiant.

Good idea to have the flow in at the bottom, so the oil carries any air bubbles out with it. Otherwise the air bubbles will keep trying to float up to the top against the flow of oil.

All done with feed from the bottom, just hand enough hose.

Also got some air out of the water cooling system, and its idleing at a stable 82/86 with fans cutting in/out.

Not 100% with you on that one Peter. The air will circulate with the oil and as youre never going to bleed the system is it an issue?? Seems like Leigh has sorted it anyway.

It's only a minor point. You will get air caught in with the oil from time to time. It will be blown through the oil system until it reaches the crank case, or find a corner to collect in. The oil cooler is a good place for it to collect because the oil speed is quite low and it has dead corners. If you do get oil sitting here, it will tend to find its way out the top when the engine is off, and probably sit in the oil supply hose. Then when you start the engine it will get dumped back into the cooler. You won't get much air there because oil is thick stuff and will tend to carry the air bubbles away with it, but since there's no other difference I can see it seems best to have the oil and air agreeing that they both want to go the same way.

The green V8S is on the road but not being competed at the moment - partly due to lack of time/money and partly because I'm still tuning the supercharger setup.
