Yep, hell of a save aswell.This is a storming race, Montoya must have a seriously quick car beause he keeps getting shuffled back during the pits, and then getting back to the top 3. He set Pole aswell and if he is in position comes the last 10 laps or so, he has a good chance.

Today's finish had a lot of action, but once I saw Earnhardt Sr, running 2nd, try to spin out the leader on the last turn of the last lap. He ended up turning the leader 90 deg and T-boning him, so that Earnhardt ended the race pushing his intended victim ahead of him to cross the line first.

I think the way the commentators were a bit subdued, and there was just a pause before they began to speak during the replays, I think was so telling about how close that edwards shunt'flip into the fence was to a real tragedy. The fence just held, and nearly bulged into the crowd, some small debris does go into the crowd, it sounded like their were injuries. Had Edwards had been hit by another car after Newman, and pitched him even higher or the fence had been only a little weaker, edwards would have gone through into the crowd, for a shades of Le Mans 1955 and multiple fatalities.Thank god that catch fencing done its job properlY.
The mess the fence was in, I don't think they'd have been able to restart the event, had it happened earlier.
Think there maybe more fences being strengthened after this.

The scariest view, for a spectator in the front row, or worse the stewarding staff who generally stand against the fence (look in the background along the fence), is at 1min 20secs.

It was the way the crash suddenly went from being a "normal" high speed shunt to the car suddenly getting airborn and just slamming into the fence and the velocity...these things are doing 210mph in the 2 car draft/bumper formations. That car hit the fence at 150mph or such like.
I saw the fence bulge and save and thought the audience there was lucky, but I went to bed soon after. I didnt realise there were injuries
Still, I hold the view that they were lucky to be injured, even only a few years ago they could well have been dead and thank God for safety improvements.
As a racing spectacle though Nascar rocks!

I forgot about him jogging to the line...the fans loved that.
One thing I didnt know till I was watching and saw them in action and people dont pick up...the cars are equipped with air brakes along the trailing edge of the roofline that are automatically activated, I presume by a default set of conditions. That supposes the car is rigged with sensors and a standard safety case OS for activating them, again I suspect when the car becomes airborn, or rather there is a WoW (Weight on Wheels) sensor/code component running.

They've had the flaps for a long time, they are not electrically operated, they open simply on the strength of airflow passing over them from a different direction than normal, i.e. backwards.One thing I didnt know till I was watching and saw them in action and people dont pick up...the cars are equipped with air brakes along the trailing edge of the roofline that are automatically activated, I presume by a default set of conditions. That said, Fox Sports are pretty good in explaining the sophiscated parts of the cars, which are mainly safety related, driver safety cells, deformable impact protection form in all the body panels, run flat tyres (or really an inner tyre) while the mechanical aspects of the cars are very old tech, two valve engines, one carburettor, etc. using a cutaway cars.
I was at Talladega this weekend! Saw the Aaron 312 on Saturday, but couldn't really see the Aaron 499 on Sunday, unfortunately.
Our host was a retired state trooper so once we got to the track, parked up next to the state trooper helicopter area, and piled into a cop car to get to Allison stand. The way I was told - Allison stand is the cheap tickets, where you don't see the pits or the start finish - but you do see the crashes! So we watched them wreck on the fastest part of the track!
Got a few pictures of the Aaron 312. Dale Earnhardt Jr is in car 5 and came 5th or 6th despite being 2nd for most of the last section of the race. There were 3 pile ups on the last 15 laps iirc and we think they added at least 2 more laps to the end to have a racing finish.
Never been to a NASCAR race before, definitely going again though!
