F1 British Grand Prix
Discussion
Maybe I'm missing something here but can someone please explain to me how Donington were awarded with the opportunity to run the British Grand Prix in 2010.
I was just reading an article which basically explained that the local council are not happy with plans for traffic management for the site and do not believe that they will be able to cope at all with the amount of traffic that would be expected. Until they are happy that sufficient thought is put into the plans they will not allow any traffic management changes to go ahead.
The Company who run Donington circuit are also subject to a massive legal case regarding £2.5m of rent arrears and are looking likely to go insolvent.
The walking toupee that is Bernie Ecclestone (also affectionately known as the Poison Dwarf) has basically said that if Donington don't get their act together then there will be no British Grand Prix as there is no way it will return to Silverstone.
Have I missed something? Silverstone have spent years getting the traffic management, parking and general facilities up to scratch and when they finally get it right they lose the right to host it. What has Bernie got against Silverstone? And why on earth would he give another venue only 2 years to get themselves sorted? Everyone knows that getting anything done in this country takes forever and then goes massively overbudget.
Anyone?

I just couldn't remember exactly what happened in respect of how it was given to Donington. Tried searching but really struggling with this new set-up on the forum.
Also kind of wanted input from people as to whether they reckon we'll lose the British Grand Prix because of that idiot, Bernie?

There's an epetition to the government to part fund it (as per most other GPs) here: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

It's good exercise Ladyhales, trying to put it in a form of words so we do understand what's going wrong.
In F1GP, Bernie has a massively world wide sort after sports entertainment brand.
But, each Grand Prix costs more than most circuit operators can make in income.
Nevertheless, there are slightly more circuits (being built) than there are available dates in the GP diary.
Some country's governments now step in to assist building facilities/hosting of these GPs in order to look like modern go-getting governments, selling newly sophisticated parts of the world with new unexplored markets waiting to be tapped into ...
Admirably, Bernie has long has had an aspiration for the UK to host it's GP at a state-of-the-art facility. As he sees it, the UK is the centre for race car and general automotive industry development, so it should have a world flagship facility to reflect this. Instead, he has a bunch of duffers who spend the minimum on a converted wartime airbase and it's bog's paint, and a government who dare not get into bed with one so visibly rich on streets smart dealing.
So now there are more top class/more charismatic GPs than there are dates, he's going where the bidding is highest and Silverstone is dropping off the bottom.
How much of this is posturing or politicking is difficult to tell.
BE has currently got his back turned on the biggest metro market in the world, the US and in doing the same to the UK, may well incur the wrath of the teams participating because of it.
There's also an interesting interface with the FIA who regulate F1. They do have some sort of register of historically important venues which they'd rather not lose off the calendar because it may change the face of GP racing too quickly for it's own good. And their’s.
Quite frankly Donington was never in it And BE knew it. As he knew Brands Hatch was simply to old and small, but if he can sniff a deal, good or bad, he's right there to mislead the unwary, and gather the bits up to refashion and sell again.
I've missed plenty ... but you get the gist?
It might even wind up the whole UK/Silverstone/UK Government to actually do something more together, who knows.

^ so basically BE seems to have no idea how capitalism works nor the current failings of capitalism today. He's be surround by so much power and wealth that doesn't 'get' that things need to operate to a profit and can only spend what they have. He's completely lost touch with reality.
Or in short, he's as senile as the smelly old grandad who lives round the corner, who RETIRED 20 YEARS AGO.

It's really simple: Donington agreed to pay Bernie's fee and agreed to upgrade the venue to his standard.
.....and Silverstone didn't agree to pay the fee he wanted and hasn't done the upgrades to the venue he has been demanding (and they have been promising) for years.
That's it, in a nutshell.

Cannot see the government funding any part of it to be honest... most of the money needed is being used to fund MP's extravagnet lifestyles...Edited by mattikake on Tuesday 5th May 15:32

This from Autosport.com gives some light on where the money is supposed to be coming from and how the section 106 TM works will be financed through granting of full planning consent.
It also makes clear how a huge hole will open up and swallow the enterprise if things do not go to plan.
To sum up - hugely optimistic
