I thought it was interesting that the FIA put it in the regs without highlighting it as a change.

Probably because when they abandoned the idea for this season they declared at the time that it would definitely be introduced for 2010.

It is still a change in the regs for 2009-2010. all changes should be highlighted. It's almost as if they were trying to bury it amongst the budget cap news.

Like I said earlier, Piston Heads should be scoring the 2009 and future championships itself, with a poll to decide the outcome of all the Steward interferences etc, then we can ignore the FIA and these silly ideas. Winner to be presented with a suitably engraved and mounted alloy wheel.

It would be really difficult to predict the outcome of these polls on Pistonheads if Hamilton is involved.

Im up for that - im sure there would be enough interest on here to raise the (minimal) amount of cash needed to make said trophy, and im sure haymarket would happily milk the publicity gained by having a basic presentation ceremony - five minutes for a quick photo-handover with whoever can be bothered from the winning team (mclaren tea boy for instance?)

and as most of the teams are based in the UK it should be easier still

i have a spreadsheet of points given as the drivers cross the line versus official result. So far Hamilton is -5, Alonso, Glock, Bourdais, Buemi and Rosberg are +1.

ETA - i am not a Hamilton fan, mainly did it to see what would happen if BrawnGP had lost their points after the diffuser fiasco.

That could add a new dimension.

So, the amended trophy could be called:

"The Pistonheads Buckled Mini-Lite Trophy for the Winner of the Formula One World Championship to the old Scoring System on the Track Results Only"

Would that work?

Then we just need PH to make stickers to go around the inside of the rim (none of your fancy engraving stuff here) and a circular bit of marine ply to mount it on. Sound classy enough?

Or cut the alloy in half so it can be mounted on a piece of wood also makes the minilite lighter and gives us 8 rather than 4, could do the constructors championship and drivers then for the next 4 years. Sounds awesome if you ask me.

IIRC, one of the reasons for introducing the "new" system of points where the top 8 scored points rather than the top 6 was to reduce the chances of this type of championship win actually happening. In days of yore, Mickey Shoemaker was either winning races or failing to finish, and yet still went on to win the drivers' championship. Whereas drivers who were more consistently in the points or on the podium weren't able to challenge him.

AFAIC, this "winner takes all" approach is effectively turning each F1 race into an "all or nothing" free-for-all. It's also more likely to encourage to teams to (again) have number 1 and number 2 drivers, i.e. whichever driver in the team wins 2 races gets preferential treatment for the remainder of the season, while the second driver becomes the support act.

And hold it all together with rape tape and cable ties.

How about the bent valve award for the "driver of the day" for each GP? It would only need one K-series to let go to supply nearly a whole season of trophys. hehewink

FOTA should just make their own trophy and have their own end of season party and ignore the FiA one.
