I am very suprised that Ferrari are letting him do this? He could be injured, his mind will no doubt be off his "day job" and looks like a slap in the face to the mechanics working there asses off at the Ferrari factory.

Whilst it may be difficult for you, to imagine that anyone's mind is capable of handling the demands of F1 alongside extra curricular activities, fortunately for him it isn't.

As for allowing him to do it, he competed in the Arctic Lapland Rally earlier this year. Oh and who flew out to support him, Montezemelo. Granted this wasn't between races, so arguably the demands of his 'day job' were less at the time, though in determining whether he's capable of managing both during the season, see above.

Ferrari obviously think he's capable of managing both and you don't, well, there we are.

You mean 'Australia's' Mark Webber. He does a charity event here in Tassie and was hit by a car on his bike last year. He still has a bit of a hobble.

Can't remember the exact details, but didn't JPM miss a couple of races because he allegedly fell of his motocross bike? Except that he wasn't meant to be riding a motocross bike, so it was a "tennis injury". Or something like that.

Juan Pablo Montoya in 2005 'officially' injured his sholder playing tennis, it is rumored he was really riding a motorbike. He missed acouple of GP's iirc.

Yes, the Duke is right. F1 drivers used to compete in races for saloon cars, GT cars and sports cars - sometimes on the same day as the F1 race, IIRC.
