Radio 5 Live McNish Interview Farce

Id forgotten about this but on the morning of the le mans start I was awoken by my radio alarm as usual tuned to 5 live. They have some woman who has a show at 6.15 who is useless along with another guy who is marginally more clued up about sport but only just. Anyway on this morning they were doing an interview with Alan McNish who had qualified 2nd earlier, the interview went like this;

5live said:

5live lady:"hi Alan, how are you?"
Alan:"Im great thanks, le mans has a great atmosphere I love being here"
5live lady:"I can imagine, didnt you win last year?"
Alan:"Yes I did, it was my 2nd win infact"
5live lady:"So are disappointed to not be racing this year?"
Alan:"erm, I am, Im racing for Audi in the number 1 car, Im qualified second"
5live lady:"Oh god! Im so sorry I should have known that! of course you are, sorry"
Alan:"Thats quite okay"
5live lady:"Its a long race, how do you stay awake for 24 hours? It must be very tiring driving for that long"
Alan:"Theres actually 3 of us driving each car, we take it in shifts of about 2 hours or more at a time, basically the length of a formula 1 race at a time!"

At this point 5live man came into the interview to try and save it from total failure

5live said:

5live man:"So Alan, how is the weather there, you must get very hot? "
Alan:"Yes its pretty warm here already its going to be very warm during the day time parts of the race, I only really drink at the pit stops though"
5live man:"Yes I can imagine it gets very hot with 3 of you in the car!"
Alan:"...We're not all in the car at the same time! we swap over at the pit stops and inbetween stints we try and sleep a little..."

At this point they wrapped the interview up rather sharpish and wished McNish well in the race. Quite simply I have no idea how those 2 clowns have jobs reporting on anything more than a school sports day!

I just can't see how the other two sharing the drivers could get any sleep in the back an R15 between shifts. I can never sleep in a car when someone else is driving...

It wasn't a good interview, but you can't expect the presenters to be clued up on every sport they talk about.

Hmmm...surely it's their job to know about the sports they are talking about.

Any interview should be pre-prepared to the extent of knowing the basics about the subject in question.

That's disgraceful. I'm actually livid. My licence fee is paying for two clowns (on a sports station!) who know nowt about one of the biggest sporting events in the world...

Certainly not in great detail.

But I'd expect anyone to know the absolute basics, but it appears these clowns simply had no idea

No, but it'd be good if they maybe understood that someone doesn't drive one of those for a full 24 hours... and it'd be a squeeze to fit three people in.

5 Live, despite the tags, isn't really a 'sports' station any more than it is a political one. There are so many subjects it handles I'm not disappointed or surprised they didn't know the details of a minority sporting event (yes, it is minority).
