Teams to launch breakaway series

The Formula One Teams' Association announced on Thursday night that it is setting up a breakaway championship.
Following a four hour meeting at Renault's Enstone factory, the eight members of FOTA said it had grown frustrated with the FIA's stance against it and that it had no option but to create its own championship.
"The teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 World Championship," said a statement.
"These teams therefore have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new Championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners. This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders.
"The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series."

Can't see the current leadership of the FIA lasting too long now though surely - either they lose the "premier" series, or have to completely back down. Lose:lose?

That would be unlikely to work if in the meantime the other entrants waiting to join are given the green light and contractual OK to enter F1, though. Unless the FIA sanctioned a large grid for next season.

Same here. It could, however, be the ultimate bluff that Max will have to back down from.If not, I will support the new championship and hope that Williams join them soon.

)This is going to get very very messy now isn't it. Fezza, Red Bull and Toro Rosso are contractually obliged to compete in F1 next year aren't they? Max seems to think so anyway.
On the one hand it's exciting because only the best teams will compete, maybe with three cars each, they'll probably go to the best circuits (including Silverstone) and strike some of these boring middle eastern races from the calender. Plus they are already promising to reduce spectator costs!
On the other hand if its not shown on terrestrial television, and Max's version remains on the BBC, viewership will be split. The breakaway will become a sport for the dedicated few and might lose its worldwide prestige and history.
