Stage Rallies - getting started as an amateur

I've always wanted to take part in a rally with a friend - but not so serious as to initially wanting to compete exactly, I don't want to go through the process of getting a competition license. Looking to do some on-road and off-road driving for me, and my friend wants to navigate. Any events recommended? Can I rent a car for a race? If we enjoy it, we may do more and buy a car and get a proper license - any guidence?

I'd agree do a road rally. The west Wales events are the best but then I'm biased. Have a look on the welsh association of motor clubs website and all road events are listed. Have a look for a novice or closed to club event as all you have to do then is join the relavant motor club although getting the required national b license is only a matter of money and forms. Find yourself a car, depends on how serious you want to get, you can in theory use your road car but lets just say most people have decent prepped cars with cages, sump guards etc. Either that or its fairly easy and hassle free to hire a car. I've done this on occasion and although expensive its the easiest way to do it and you end up literally turning up and driving.
If you pick the right rally you could end up with anything up to about 150 miles in length. Ok its not a max attack all the way stage rally but trust me go and watch your average welsh event and you'll soon understand that it doesn;t exactly mean sunday drive either. Most events usually have a decent amount of off road whites usage as well which is brilliant fun!
