another stupid tyre question

what are your thoughts on running dunlop direnza semi slicks on the front, while having slicks on the back, keep your answers polite please, i know its a daft question but has anyone any experience on this ?

I know there are lots of things to consider, but would they not go off early in the race leading to understeer and maybe take a little longer to heat up, again, leading to understeer??

It's a question rather than a suggestion (cos I know about as much as you do on tyres methinks!!)

yes, trouble is i have 17" rears 16" fronts
rears btcc tyres but 16" more difficult, some cheap 16" direnza's at the moment, its all about the money, or lack of at the moment!!
i will see what else i can sell to fund the racing.

can you get a good price on the direnza's in 15" ? im looking for something to put on my taz either 205 or 225 R15


slicks seem to be about £710 delivered and D0z 3 £565 and a full set for the tuscan a couple of pints under a grand !!!

After checking the tyre temp at brands, the fronts get much hotter, so would guess they are doing more work than the rears, so you would want the best grip you can at the front.

out of interest what offset are your 17's that fit the rear, that allow you to use BTCC tyres. as be tempted to get a set of wheels for the rear so I can use the cheaper BTCC tyres that are about.

you other option would be to re-design the front arches so you can fit 17's on the front also.

You do need to be careful with used slicks... Myself and Steve hall bought some 18" ex cupra slicks... plenty of tread depth left but totally fubared in terms of actual grip... worse than 2 year old doj2's worn to the canvas!!!

i appreciate your comments on the dodgey used slicks, i am learning what to look for, ie blue petrol looking edges, flat spots,but it is hard to spot a good on from a crap one, you need to trust the source,they will only shag me once, and i will shag them back!!

Yeah, if you can build up a long term relationship with someone for used slicks thats the way to do it... random buying off the internet is probably a no no..

Hi Tim,
If at all poss get the best rubber on TAZO you can, she gives away power but is so well sutup that you will be giving away time without the correct rubber!! Pls do not be tempted to put 17" rims on the front as this will only cause the car to under steer like mad, it is setup to turn in and oversteer a little if breaking traction which is far better to deal with than understeer.

Also I run 16 fronts and buy the same tyres as the old tomcat series they are the same compound as the tc's ish. They work well with the set up you have.

I was actually quite surprised how much grip I was getting last night from some worn 4 year old Kumho v700's... nice and balanced too



Although they were a bit lively on the gravel...

I've got quite a few part worn sets if anyone's interested
