RE: Mark Webber for the Championship?

Ha ha. Since when has Webber been the teams number 1? He has spectacularly underwhelmed everyone with his averageness for the last few seasons. This season the new Wunderkind joined the team and Webber has done well to raise his game and to catch up, match and now surpass Vettel.
Of all the teams, I would say Red Bull are the ones with two equally treated drivers.

I think Webber has always been a decent driver who has had awful luck - some his own fault, some beyong his control. Of all the teams, I would say Red Bull are the ones with two equally treated drivers.
And I agree - Red Bull have 2 equal drivers, and I can see them at least winning the manufacturers title based on this. I rate Webber. But I also rate his team mate.

He was worried about Vettel this year as he knew he would have to fight to be quick. I think he proved a lot yesterday and as you could see the team was over the moon for him. He is a well liked guy at the factory and is always visiting to see how everyone is. Sebastian does the same but not as often. As for when Coulthard was there...

Vettel's problem is that he is still prone to errors. But it's his first season in a winning car and he will get better - once he's consistent Webber won't see which way he went, you only have to look at the qualifying record so far (and isn't Mark supposed to be a qualifying specialist?).Of all the teams, I would say Red Bull are the ones with two equally treated drivers.
Having said that, Webber appears to have stopped falling asleep during races this year.
I think Webber is where 98% of the current F1 drivers are as regards talent. That is to say, no doubt good enough to warrant being in F1, but other than that just another component of an uninteresting unspectacular characterless soup. As for a championship shot, maybe worth a flutter, but no more than a tenner, I'd have thought. The RB5 is looking like a cracking package at the moment, and it's one of those cars a blind, one armed, one legged chimp could drive to a title if Red Bull keep developing it and it stays reliable.

Looking at the remaining 8 races I still see the Brawns up by 6-2 in favour of their hotter climate advantage. But Ferrari & McLaren can still throw some spanners in the works taking points away from both Red Bull and Brawn. We'll have to see what Brawn bring to Hungary (new update) and if they go away from there beating the Red Bulls (if it's hot) then it's theirs to win.

Agreed, but I think Brawn would welcome the Fezzas and Macs talking points away- they are still leading by a decent chunk. AG

I think this season is the only chance Webber and Button will get to win the championship and it's the last chance Barrichelo has to win it too. Vettel, Hamilton etc. will have other chances...FourWheelDrift said:

Yeah it could be very much about the maccas and fezzas as I believe brawn don't have the same resources/budget to develop the car. Worst thing for brawn would be RB taking wins then fezzas/maccas stealing good points, the tables could turn very quickly if the speed/tyre optimisation their hoping for at the hotter tracks doesn't materialise.As for webber he's good but a bit "top of the 2nd tier". Vettel has the aura of a champion, the promise of brilliance. Thats not to say Webber couldn't get the job done, maybe vettel will make a few n00b mistakes as the pressure mounts.... Not that I'd put money on it.
Personally I think we're being too quick to blow smoke up Mr Webber's backside.
He's a fast driver, known to be able to fire out fast qualifying laps but one win a champion doesn't make.
Remember how dominant Vettel was only one race previous at Silverstone so they both have a dominant race each.
The next 2 to 3 races will determine if Webber can add consistency to his winning ability.
