Good little video that shows how quick everything happens, and highlights the need for good presenters as well as experts.

Was not impressed by the Jake geezer when the season 2009 BBC TV F1 coverage first started. Touch of the media-smoothie know nowt presenter about him.

Have since revised that opinion. He appears a genuine enthusiast for the stuff he presents ( unlike too many other so called presenters within our media ) and his style of F1 link man presentation has improved considerably with each GP since day one this season.

He now gets a BIG thumbup from me....yes

He's much smoother than some of the other guys, and I wonder if that "open" ear piece is the reason. It's good to get a bit of an idea whats going on in the background for the poor bugger.

One thing that impresses me is although he's obviously new to the F1 circus he's grasped it really well, and seems to ask good questions, while some previous presenters have asked questions that have you shouting at the screen and calling them thick.

His blogs quite a laugh, last one had him canoeing on the Thames with some mouldy life preserver from his sea scout days, musing about asking JC over to join him but reminding himself JC'd be on his yacht somewhere in the Med.

Perhaps the Beeb should be looking at swapping him with Legard.

(As a prelude to pushing Legard out altogether of course.)

Legard has to put up with the same, if not worse, directions in his earpiece. Brundle, EJ, et al, do not, even if they can hear it, have to pay attention.

Easy job ain't it?

Ledhead doesn't have to deal with any of this
He just commentates - easiest job of the weekend

Working live is a real challenge -but as long as you don't think about it and hope u don't cock it upm, then it's not too bad and alot more fun then doing take after take

Yes he does. Are you suggesting Legard doesn't work live too?

BTW: I have to add.

You commentating experts were all behaving like schoolgirls with a crush on the gym mistress over DC... Pant wettingly in awe. He's a real bore unless EJ is winding him up. I'll go further; he adds absolutely nothing to the coverage. No biting insight, no humour, no tactical nous, nothing, not one iota, unless Jake or EJ are asking.

[highschoolgirl]Gee, super DC he's the best[/highschoolgirl]

How do you know what Brundle can hear and that he doesn't have to pay attention to the producer's instructions? The fact that he often cues in the pitlane reporters suggests the opposite to me.

He's not the 'commentator'.

I'm sorry, I'm not following you. How does that tell you what he hears in his earpiece or whether he receives instructions that he has to follow? If you work in the industry or something and actually know, then I'll believe you, but you seem like you're just guessing.

They may, as I alluded, both have the same feed. Let's try this:

Legard is the 'commentator' Brundle 'is not'.

One is paid to listen to the director, one is paid to add insight. Which is which I wonder?

OK, well based on the same guesswork as you, I'll say that they are both paid to listen to the producer and both have to follow instructions they are given. smile

Talking about 'open talkback' lots of presenters have that, some deal with it better then others. Ironically Steve Rider was a real master when it comes to dealing with multiple sources of info, I've never known such a professional presenter. The talkback on that clip is actually very calm, going off air on an F1 race is quite well structured and the editor you can hear (Mark Wilkin) is very calm, which is a huge help. Some of them are a little flaky and cause issues!

To be fair to Jake though, he is very good, very keen and really throws himself at what he is presenting. I worked with him on the first live Super Bowl the BBC covered in Arizona. The production team was handed picked as American Football geeks, and Jake really learned about the sport in the run up to the game. Plus the conditions there were very hard to work under, domed stadium with massively loud PA and following a host broadcaster (which is harder then being in control of the pictures) but Jake done a top job. Really impressed me, and I'm chuffed for him that he's got the F1 gig.

Sadly, have to agree ... to this observer DC has NOT improved since day 1. On the other hand, EJ has improved .... considerably. Quite like his style and the exchanges between him and DC as well as the others provides added interest for this F1 enthusiast. EJ, DC and MB all have a wide range of motor racing experience and all can be interesting to listen to.

Puzzled that MB legged it ASAP after the race allegedly "on his bike". Strange that.

I think EJ trips over his words a lot, so could me more eloquent, still an eejit mind. Like Bernie though, he makes me laugh and despite some folks prejudice, he really has seen it from the inside...

...As he constantly reminds us. smash
