Poor bd. The writing was on the wall though...as said by others before, Tost seems to have a habit of heavily blame drivers for poor results.

Let's hope he can revive his career back across the pond. I've seen some of his moves on YouTube from his Champ Car days, and the talent is definitely there.

Back to the states then, but there isn't a obvious seat in the IRL open for him. Unless he has a deal to be in another Red Bull backed car somewhere else.

Some chat about the replacement here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I expect you'll see him doing more with Peugeot rather than going back to single-seaters in the US.

Pity - seemed like a handy driver in Champ cars but clearly the F1 cars he was given didn't suit him, and he didn't seem able (allowed ??) to change the car, or adapt his driving style, to suit.

This was actually announced just before the German GP- I have to suffer the French coverage but they picked up on this very quickly. There was also noises about Alonso to Ferrari (but they love Fernando over there and say that pretty regularly!)

With good reason in this case, it cannot be denied that Bourdais did not deserve an F1 seat, however good he was in the USA.

I enjoy watching the Race Car Driver program on Dave that features the champ car series from X years ago. Bourais certainly looked to be in a different league to those guys, however when drivers like Paul Tracy are the best that there is, that's not exactly a grand achievement.

Champ Cars and F1 cars are poles apart in the way that they appear to handle / drive. The Champ Car appears to move around quite a lot (lots of sideways slides and drifts), however very predicatably. An F1 car, by comparision, seems to drive like its on rails the majority of the time, and slides and corrections need to be lightning fast to stay on the track.

I can see how the transition from one to another would be difficult.

Note to the F1 rule makers. Whilst F1 cars must by its nature demand that only the worlds best drivers are successful (to maintain the kudos that a point, podium, win carry), some of the overtakes in Champ Cars appear to allow drivers to drive a number of different lines through corners to get an advantage, and not just on the open airfield circuits either.

It's long intrigued me that there is little consistency in the transfer of ability between formulae. Some say that "if you're quick - you're quick. end of" but that doesn't seem to hold true. Those that come to mind are:

Zanardi - great in the US - not so great in F1
Villeneuve - great in the US - great in F1 (for a while)
Maggnesson - brilliant in F3 (Jackie Stweart announced him as the new Senna) - lousy in F1

Works the other way around too:

Mansell hardly set the FF, F3 world alight but made a pretty good job of F1 and Indy
IIRC, Schummacher wasn't anything special in the lower formulae.

Bourdais has been driving LeMans so my guess is he wasn't happy with how his F1 career was developing and started to branch out.
I've read on here where someone had asked the question of F1 drivers going out and driving different formula cars or changing to a completely different type of car within an F1 season or contract. IIRC it was only a handful. Maybe Bourdais wanted to diversify his driving while RB/TR wanted him to focus more on his F1 role.

No doubt the full story will appear soon

Indycar's made up of f1 failures though, who all seem to be doing alright for themselves. Doornbos and Wilson this year. It's strange the way that those who fail in f1 seem to do well in Indycar - Bourdais included - yet those who make the switch from F1 to Nascar find it a lot harder. Montoya went from being a front-runner in f1 to a mid-runner in Nascar, while Speed's gone from being the slowest in a grid of 20 to the slowest in a grid of 30...

The most ironic name in Motor Racing history.

We await a judgement on the same vein with Will Power.

I don't think that is quite fair. He honestly never had the equipment to do anything amazing in F1.

Lol, that'll be the most noteworthy things he's done in F1. I really expected a little more from mr freakin' 4 times cart champ, I can see what they mean about the poor state of american open wheel racing now.

I do have to admit, I think he's a great driver, even carrying the size handicap. He did a great job against Briscoe at the Glen a few weeks ago. And while in his f1 career he did score a point, he finished two laps down in a rain-soaked race.
The telling thing for me was that during qualifying for France, when they had the silly system of aggregate qually, him and Verstappen in the Minardi's had the only dry run on the Friday, and the Dutchman was still quicker than him. While the equipment wasn't perfect, it was still equal. And he was still slower than Verstappen.

CART was practically dead when Bourdais was winning it, all of the talent in America was in Nascar and the few decent open wheeler drivers were in the IRL.

The last driver to transfer from America when it actually had a decent open wheel series was Montya and he was pretty decent.

On a related note, tony george has been voted out in the states so maybe there will be an open wheeled resurgance across the pond with its newly reunited series.

I thought he was great, but then hearing some of what he says on Fridays when in the car makes me question him... He just didn't seem to have a clue!

He was quicker, the car was underweight and they sent him to the back of the grid.

totally agree, it works the other way round.. F1-> champ car... I always thought he looked miserable too.
