Schumacher - fit or not fit

It's looking more and more likely that Schuey ain't going to be racing this weekend.
He sustained a neck injury in a bike crash earlier this year - and there was always doubt about it.

If i was a cynical man - was this all a big hype to increase the very under sold Valencia GP ?

"Michael Schumacher's manager has called a halt to production of memorabilia and merchandise celebrating the return of the seven time world champion to Formula One.

According to Auto Bild, Willi Weber fears a repeat of 1997, when he spent a million Euros on merchandise celebrating Schumacher's first title for Ferrari, when in fact he was pipped at the post by Jacques Villeneuve.

This time, the fear is that while Schumacher intends to fill the injured Felipe Massa's cockpit in Valencia and beyond, there are growing doubts regarding his race fitness. "As long as the return is not one hundred percent for certain, we are producing nothing," said Weber.

It is rumoured that Schumacher may even have fractured a bone when he injured his neck in a motorcycle testing crash in February.
"It was a very bad accident," his spokeswoman Sabine Kehm told Sunday's edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeinen Sonntagszeitung, "but we are not going to talk about it in public."

It is a believed a decision about the 40-year-old's Valencia return will be made some time this week.

"Only when all the test results are available can we make a decision," said Dr Johannes Peil, of the Bad-Nauheim Sportklinic. "The last word will be Schumacher's.”

I think the word 'rumours' in the title sums this whole situation up - and there's lots of them going about - inevitably. It seems to me that he is going to a whole lot of trouble (karting, testing etc..) not to turn up at Valencia.

Why is he spending today and tomorrow driving around Mugello in a 2007 car if he won't be racing in Valencia?

If he's fit enough to do that, he'll be fit enough to race.

Takes days to arrange this kind of thing, but I guess he's just realised it isnt going to happen (racing) because of these injuries.

I think you'll find they always said that the return was "subject to testing and fitness" - it was the press that hyped it up. The reality being that the couldn't keep any testing secret.

Bugger... Still, I'm sure the organisers of the Valencia GP will be pleased to have shifted a few extra tickets over the last few weeks! I wonder if people will now be asking for a refund?

My guess would be Luca Badoer, but only for a race or two then an early comeback by Massa

Real shame for the spectacle of the sport.
But i think he's done the right thing - i really doubt that he would of been able to be near the frontend. Can you imagine if he got knocked out in 1st quali !??!

The whole Schuey legacy would be gone.

I suspect that part of the decision not to race was driven by this.
