One of the most famous road rallies in the country, the illuminations is coming soon. And with the organiser in his second year is prooving to be a fantastic clerk of course after some mishaps in the past the illuminations is well on its way to being a fantastic road event!
What is a road rally?
basically - a treasure hunt in a car, on public roads, usually a demanding drive for any driver. a good navigator (map reader) is required. often better value for money than a trackday!
Is it legal?
Yes it is a legal event, we liason with the local police authorities and the MSA (Motorsports association (Government body)) to ensure we are as safe as posisble and that we do not annoy locals.
How do i get involved?
Road rallies can only be organised by MSA Credited clubs. nearly every area in the UK has one. if you would like to get involved with rallying finding your local carclub is your first step.

Make your mind up friend.... is it a treasure hunt or a road rally?I've never heard of this event, but a decent road rally should be a lot more than a treasure hunt!!
It needs an MSA permit for a start and (unless you're running a clubmans section) all competitors need a non-race nat B license at the minimum as well.
Pre-plot or plot n bash? mileage covered? maps used? regularity sections? entrance costs etc etc

no need for that. the bits at the bottom were for people who have never heard of a road rally before and needed to understand what it was, and if you have never heard of the illuminations road rallying there is no need for you to talk to me like that.. the lumies were part of the motoring news rounds back in the "Glory Days" for years and considered one of the top rallies in the country.

however it is 160miles of metalled and unmetalled roads.

There's an excellent thread on the BR forum detailing a huge number of books that are now on my must-find list, that one's close to the top.
@ the OP = apologies for my other post, came across a lot harsher than I meant... usual excuse... too early, no coffee etc etc.
I suspect I'll be out of the country on the event date, if not then I'm in!!
The 'lumies was great back in 2003 when I navigated in an Escort Mexico (it was a day/night historic-only event back then) - clutch started to slip at the end of the day leg, and the night leg used Wrynose and Hardknott - the time we lost struggling to get up the 1 in 3's was more than made up dropping down the other side 
this and last year are/were running as night only sections, however if entries are high this year there will be a possiblity of a afternoon of Tests befor the rally, including sections down the morecambe promenade! a personal favourite feature. but as we intend for this to be a great event yet again we need to build on our "clientel" befor we do too much

Was quite a good event with the likes of John Moreton running on full slicks a MK2 Escort, loads of what were basically GP4 tarmac cars out.
Ohhhh, them were days....
Mental, but epic. Lots of rallies up in the southern lakes, the RL Brown, Summer Rally, Devils Own. The roads should be closed and used as stage rallie IMHO

Back in the "glory days", the target times over Hardknott and Wrynose used to be positively insane. For the Minis and Imps, the majority of the time had to be made up on the way down, which led to some, err, interesting braking issues.I'm glad to see the Illuminations on-the-up once again; will definitely have to consider an entry!

Rumour has it that the route is insane. although noone has been alowed to see all of it except Paul.
im just trying to raise the profile of it as much as possible, and also Road/stage rallying in general. hopefully persuade some other carclubs to do the same and promote themselves to the lads with loads of money and nothing to spend it on but trackdays.
