It has occured to me that British drivers (and many other sportsmen and teams) perform better when the chips are down. When they are chasing a lost cause. When they have been written off.
And that the converse is true. They 'freeze' or 'bottle it' when leading and being chased.
The relevant examples are Lewis' nightmare finish two years ago, followed by his dream finish last year; and Jenson's nightmare quali turned to dream finish this year.
The Germans never seem to suffer the nerves of leading (M. Schumacher and the football team spring to mind).
Is it a peculiarity of the Brits?
Are we the best at snatching both victory from the jaws of defeat AND defeat from the jaws of victory?
