He was not using his hands though, just like phone hands free, that is the legal issue. Both his hands were on the wheel, i agree it is crazy though eh.

I'd be very surprised if the "staged gravel trap" was even on the same day, this is TV "reality" after all, I've never seen a car allowed out with a passenger at a MSA officiated event, nor unofficial single car practice.

I'm sure Jake's getting it all free as well, judging by the adverts and web addresses, overtly on show throughout the piece.

Of course he didn't have to pay - he's giving club motorsport a boost, surely that's a good thing? And he was a consummate professional all weekend, stayed around to give trophies to the drivers on the podium and in a less glamorous marquee round the back of the paddock. He also signed autographs for anyone who asked, arranged to send on DC and EJ's autographs for a few and gave rides around the circuit to several people in the safety car - he could quite easily have refused any of that.

For the record I like Jake, and it doesn't surprise me a jot that he hung around to hand out trophies. I actually like BBC coverage of F1, but it also depresses me how poor the motorsport TV coverage is in this country, and when they do they feel the need to tabloid it for the mainstream audience, I've had friends in half a dozen of those 'be a racing driver' programmes including Formula Woman, and the contrived scenes for television, TV often does motorsport a great disservice when it does. Otherwise broadcasters tend to ignore motorsport. I do know a little of what I speak, trying to get karting on the air. And having mentioned in the piece the MSA go motorsport initiative, and to encourage ordinary people to get into motorsport, he is hardly the same, as ordinary, as I for instance, even if I can bring a camera crew, I couldn't get you prime time BBC coverage, quid pro quo for the drive, initial the quote from EJ that after his "off", that he'll pay for any damage. I doubt very much. And as someone who enjoyed racing karts, and could not raise the budget to get into FF, I can say indeed I am jealous, but £2K a corner was enough to kibosh my car racing aspirations.

...the "gravel trap" run was on the Friday not on the race day - the shots without the MSVR banners on the pit railings were Thursday the ones with were the Saturday so you can see where the footage is bolted together!

This sort of thing is always going to be "sexed up" for an F1 audience. Those of us who do run grass roots motorsport week in and week out are very grateful for any coverage that might encourage others to either compete, volunteer as marshals and/or spectate - coverage within quali and race day of the last GP of the year and the first AD GP is fantastic for ordinary British motorsport.

I don't know what the commercial deal was between Jake/the BBC and Lotus, I don't think there was a lot of damage and Lotus are getting fab publicity out of it.

Just relax and enjoy

(and yes, he was a nice guy who very happily agreed to take one of our marshals around the track at lunchtime).

I thought that the logos were rather prominently displayed, considering only a few years ago (maybe still) Blue Peter put masking tape over the brands on cereal packets to avoid advertising. I would expect it on ITV / Sky but not the BBC.

Still good luck to him, bet he is having the time of his life.

Motorsport has *never* been better covered on tv than it currently it and outside of football it is probably the most well covered sport on TV at the moment.

Alas, too much height (not weight )and too few funds (not talent ) keeps me out of karts and my running is limited to doing badly at the odd corporate jolly. I'd dearly love to race cars one day but for now I've managed to find a way to satisfy my love of writing and motorsport. Have a good one at Buckmore Park, at least someone got Crofty to mention it during FP3

It's a racing car, so sponsors' logos pretty much go with the territory these days. Should they have covered them over? What about the the logos on the F1 cars that are shown on the BBC, should they be covered up as well? And what about stadium advertising and sponsorship of football teams shown on Match of the Day?

Thanks, spot on it's a race car and just like every other race car in our series it's got sponsor logo's, in fact it's got less than most!

In fact the car actually had less companies on it than the previous round where someone paid £4500 to a childrens hospice to drive it, previous to that World Land Speed record holder Andy Green drove it to try and raise awarness and funds for Bloodhound SSC, prior to that in excess of 15 people have driven the car in the last 2 and a half years, most of whom wouldn't have got the chance to race otherwise. no monies ever been asked for and we're a non profit club, not part of Lotus, none of the companies who had logo's on the car paid to be on 'just that' car they were series sponsors! in fact an offer of £1000 to have one sticker on the car was turned down.

Even our usual windscreen sponsor gave up their position on all cars in the race so that Go Motorsport could have the screen FOC, we as a series even paid for the vinyl!

The car was offered foc and with no restrictions.. it has been sexed up for BBC1 but then how often do you see pure club motorsport run alongside F1 on prime time i think thats a small price to pay.. nothing was staged in qually or the race, i could have done without my car being damaged but thats part and parcel of racing.

Jake and the BBC guys were great and the whole point was to promote Go Motorsport, something they gave quite a few plugs to and hopefully our little series is doing it's bit, we've definately brought a lot of people into racing both as drivers and spectators over last couple of years..

Take away Go Motorsport, BBC Sport and our series sponsors and the cars pretty bare!
